It won't go into 'top' gear (the most relaxed sounding one) until the car is warmed up. When my temp guage hits 50% it goes up a gear (well, technically the torque converter lock-down kicks in) straight away.

When you change the trans oil change the trans filter( inside the pan on the bottom of the transmission) they usually get ignored and when abit blocked the oil has a job getting thru till it thins down due to rise in temperature. HTSH
