Hi all, I'm going to do an oil and filter change tomorrow on my Td5 auto box. Now I have been told to use "Dexron" I think it's called as it's the best. I have also been told to make sure it's not standard ATF in the box at the minute as this will not mix with the new oil and cause all sorts of problems. So my question is how do I know what oil is in the box at the minute and what do I refill it with? Any suggestions?

hi,i used lucas oil in my auto box,this has made it change a lot smoother,just look on ebay for it or pm me and i will give you the details.

Dexron 2, 2D or 3 is a specification, not a brand therefore you can use your favorite oil brand they all do ATF to Dexron 3 spec and they all mix.
Land Rover oils were Texaco, but i know dealers use there favorite brand in vehicle servicing.

Remember you are unable to drain the full amount, half remains in the torque converter.

Hi There, having just done this on my TD5, may I offer you a couple of tips/hints.

The fill/level plug is a torx 50;

The sump plug is a smallish allen plug;

Even though the total capacity of the 'box is about 9 ltrs, you'll only get out about 4.5ltrs, the rest will stay in the torque converter (TC);

Use Dexron II D, that is the correct spec and when I was buying is significantly cheaper than Dexron III;

When you have the old oil out, check it's smell and colour - burnt and brown is not good;

Leaving aside the filter change (as I didn't do one) after the oilchange, run the vehicle for a few hundred miles, then do another 5ltr ish oil change. The first new stuff mixes in with the old oil over a period, so by changing it again you achieve a reasonable compromise of getting as much of the old oil out as poss.
