Ok, for a start you should do this on a cold engine.

1. You will need a container which will accommodate 6 litrs of waste oil, tools to remove the sump drain plug;

2. Having placed your waste oil container under the autobox sump, and ensure that the engine is not running and the gearbox selector is in P: remove the sump plug (allen key style) and allow oil to drain out completely. Leave to drain and have a cuppa;

3. Once there is no more oil coming out (approx 4.5ltrs) refit sump plug;

4. Now it's time for re-filling the 'box,. This is a 2 stage process;

5. Put approx 2.5 ltrs (or until full) of oil in, via the dipstick tube;

6. Now start the engine and leave it running, cycle through each gear lever position pausing 2 secs in each position to allow for drive take-up.

So starting in P, then R - pause; then N; then D - pause; then 3 then 2 then 1 - pause; then back to P. LEAVE THE ENGINE RUNNING.

7. Now back to the dipstick, continue filling until you reach the high mark on the dipstick;

8. Once reached, turn off the engine, give yourself a big pat on the back and have another cuppa ! You're done.

Only thing i noticed was sump plug is standard 19 mm spanner on mine ;)

good info, ill be following the list when i change my oil this week :) :)

All the Disco 1 autos I've done have an Allen bolt for the autobox sump plug, and quite a small one. These have been mainly '97 and '98.

Biglad (or anyone else who knows...) - you mention that only 4.5 litres come out. My understanding is that the 'box take 9 litres of oil, so if I undo the sump to replace the strainer, am I going to get the other 4.5 litres on my bonce or does most of it stay in pipes and galleries. How much does the oil cooler hold, or would that have all drained back into the sump when cold?

Hi Spong, the whole autobox/torque converter/pipes and cooler has a total of 9ltrs, but approx 50% stays within when you remove the sump plug so you only get approx 4.5 ltrs out at any one time.

Most peeps realise that you need to do the oilchange once, then runs for 100mls or so for the old and new to mix, then do the oilchange again. That way you will end up with the majority of the oil being new stuff.

Fab, I've just bought 10 litres of the stuff, so that should cover two changes with some to spare. Thanks for the info chaps.
