Hi Hippo
No it slowly started getting worse, especially when it was cold.
We were in the process of getting a new car,so I part exed it.
As it seemed to play up most for a few miles after changing or draining and filling the box then settle down for a while I was begining to think it was bits in the oil stopping the solenoids fully shutting so I filtered the oil through a paper coffee filter to see if there was anything in it.
There were nothing obvious, but a few very small white bits smaller than a pin head that were very soft like bits of silicon sealant. Whether these could jam in the solenoid, but being soft, then get squeezed out so it would eventually work again I don't know. I also took one of the solenoids I had remove apart, but could only get the coil bit out, not the moving parts but it looked like it had some of these bits in it (hard to tell as they are so small and soft) so I wonder if they are bits of the insulation or seals in the solenoids that are breaking up. I still have the two I took out if you want them.
But for the first time in 30 + years I no longer own a Landrover. :(:(:(:(:(:(:(

I'm sorry to hear it's not gone well. I was hoping it would settle down and at least be back to how it was prior to the solenoid replacement, even if the original fault was still there. Would be nice if it had of fixed it. It did seem to get worse after the solenoid change but that's the risk of cracking it open I guess. Many would say it's just an auto but they're complex inside and gremlins may be let loose if you open it. I would be suspicious of something being in the oil too. Sounds like the white stuff could slow down the solenoids transition from one state to another, as if it were delaying the solenoid movement which caused a delay in gear shift. That may relate to yer original problem as if it was not in the correct gear/power sequence due to late shifting. All guess work.

I will look out for white stuff when I get round to fully opening my broken spare auto to see if there's any in there. I once drained my oil through a filter but didn't find anything.

Hopefully you'll be Freelandering again one day.

Hi Hippo
The bits were more like dirty clear silicon than bright white, and very small.
If you P.M. me your address I will send you the two old solenoids if you fancy taking one apart.
Thanks Ian
