The correct procedure for the correct oil level is with the engine running, oil at correct running temperature and sombody manualy going up and down through the box and the ATF should dribble out of the side plug. Don't stop the engine before you put the plug back in as the box dumps the oil and it ****es every where !

the plug back in tip is a belter ! .... cheers for that ...... how long do you keep going up and down the box ? ..... until the fluid basically stops dribbling out ?

Mine just feels sluggish when you pull away, the gear changes are mostly smooth, a tad clunky when cold

I'm expecting it to be low on oil, as i think the pull off being sluggish could be due to dirty or low level oil ?

its a 53 plate disco II TD5 just clocked 105k ... and i think its most likely the original box etc .... its got FSH from landrover specialists etc

if the |G-box oil change is on the schedule i would presume it has been done ?

Hi David, it might sound a little cynical but I wouldn't assume anything has been done.

In fact when I get another car I start by creating a baseline for all future servicing by :

1. Changing all fluids - engine, gearbox, transfer box and both diffs; coolant; brake fluid - almost certainly NEVER done;

2. Change all filters - 2 for the engine oil circuit, air filter, fuel filter, ACE filter (where fitted) SLS filter (where fitted) - almost certainly NEVER done;

3. Grease props;

4. Check all brake pads - replace as necessary and service calipers;

After that lot you will have a baseline for the future. Bear in mind that LR service intervals are not designed solely to protect the vehicle but much more about showing it's relative cheapness to service.
