Last year i cooked my auto box during a long slow off roading session, 8 hours of slow driving and the next day it would not change out of 1st.

so i have fitted a replacement box and done a few miles on it now and all seems fine. i also fitted a new oil temp sensor just in case the old one was faulty, there was some melting of plastic parts around the oil pipes

This year i am planning on doing a lot more off roading and towing and am concerned about cooking another box as the ares around the gear selector still gets very hot.

what thoughts/experience do people have with this?
is it worth fitting a p38 cooler to the D1, anyone done it.

Cheers

cooler wont work without air flow ,ensure its covered by a good flow from the fan ,the only time an auto box wont produce significant heat is at lock up when cruising on the road

Either the over heat sensor was faulty or u ignored the warning light. :(
As above, u need a cooling air flow, do u still have the engines viscous fan fitted and so continually drawing air through the rad and via the cooler at the front.

You could up grade the cooler, they are available in the "go faster" shops.

no warning light but i must check the lamp, viscous fan was/is fitted, no winch so no air flow restriction.

any thoughts on fitting the p38 cooler?

I uprated mine via Allisport:

I also fitted a gearbox oil temperature sender unit in the gearbox sump which is obviously wired to a gauge in the cabin:

Normal driving now sees the temp gauge barely moving out of the blue.
In the height of the heat in Morocco during low range, hard sand driving, it gradually crept just over half way to 3/4.

thanks for the info, very interesting

i was hoping to get away with a bit less then £250, more in the £50 region
