So today's issue, I removed the rear passenger door card to discover the big lower speaker was not connected only the smaller upper one, which works fine.

I reconnected the lower speaker and the cone flexed once then crackled a bit. I tested the big speaker and it is fine. The small upper speaker is working.

I replaced the plug on the big lower speaker, no change.

I guess it is either the loom (God I hope not!) or something wrong at the amp end?

Any electronic experts? Where and what can I check? All the other speakers are good.

Could just be the speaker is duff, not uncommon fro the speech coil to fail on in door speakers. Stick an ohm meter acros the speaker and gently move the cone in and out, see if the reading jumps around.

Thanks hun, the speaker works fine. I plugged it to the upper speak wire, and it worked ok. I plugged the upper speaker onto the lower loom and got the same crackle affect.

Hi Rachel,
There are some speaker wire connectors behind passenger side kick panel, could be the problem?

Just popped out to look. Seem tight and sealed.
You can't pop out and see Rachel, the plastic covers may be sealed but the actual housings may not be, also there are 2 screw on the panel that need coating with silicone to stop leaks.

Bugger, I can seal the screws this weekend. What do I do about the housings? Seems to be only wet in under the kickpanel on the drivers side. Carpet a little wet under drivers feet. Not the o rings. I did have have to repair the door recently, wonder if the wet cable grove was from that.

when you say repair the door did you mean the top door seal as this is common for failure in the top corner;)

Wipers oiff, plastic trim under the windscreen off, you will seel the metalwork that the pollen filters go into, there is a seal where this bolts to the bulkhead, on mine the seal had been badly fitted presumably from new, I re-fitted with silicone sealant.
Otherwise check the door seal as Druim said.

Still P38 Audio - different issue

My 2001 with an Alpine unit is stuck on a set volume. Doesnt respond to steering wheel or rotary control. Also only the rear speakers work. Strangely however - sometimes if I am in the car without the engine running, the front speakers become live again and the volume controls work! As soon as I start the engine - back to only the rear speakers and the unresponsive volume controls.

Any ideas? I may consider borrowing another head end unit.

Learn to sing? Well its one idea :D

Sounds possible that the amp is faulty?
Could be going into protct mode due to bad ground?
Could be a possibility.

Do you have factory sat nav? You get these symptoms when the sat nav drive is kaput.

Yes, factory Sat Nav. Kaput. I didn't think it was worth fixing. Two of the plugs on the back of the satnav unit were similar and could be inadvertently swaped round. That killed the headend unit!

Thats a shame. Usually if you disconnect the sat nav drive you get your audio system back to where it should be.:(

Are you sure that all of the other large speakers are working in the other doors.?
I've come across a stereo set-up before where the main speakers were driven by an amp but the high range speakers were driven directly by the head unit.

Have you had a look around for any 'spare' wiring. You can get weird results from incomplete removal of in-car mobile phone installations.
