Hi All.

Not trying to depress anyone, but I have been thinking of winter.

I have decided to put 18" wheels on the L322. But, do I put AT's or Winter tyres on?

Use will be road/grass fields/winter conditions.

??

Unless you live in the wilds of the nowhere - Winter tyres are a bit extreme, a good set of AT's will do you fine in most cases! IMHO

Winter tyres aren't just for snow Ant. They are low temperature tyres. In the colds of winter normal tyres go hard and brittle as such no grip. Winter tyres are made of a compound that still works in the cold. Once the mercury goes below 8C it is worth chucking on winter tyres for extra grip on tarmac in the cold conditions.

Now if you get heaps of snow, you want snow tyres.

Fair game....living in leafy Surrey, we rarely get major snowage or bitter temps, that those north of Watford seem to get :D

Thor....stay calm.
I have GG AT'2 on my p38 for winter use. Just thought what to do with the L322.

probably do the same....or maybe the coopers.

cheers.

I've always gone for ATs too. If you have a spare set of wheels, don't go off the black stuff and like swapping them every few weeks then there's a benefit in winter tyres. If however you want one set of wheels/tyres and have mixed driving on/off road, then just drive to the conditions. The biggest downside of winter tyres is poor wear and when temperatures do rise, they'll scrub out in 5 minutes!

I had Michelins on my first RR Classic and TBH never again - great grip, but wandered all over the place and rubbish in mud. Transformed by a switch to BFG's and never looked back. Probably not as good in the wet, but much more relaxing/stable to drive and handled mud/snow/tarmac well. On the P38, I have GG AT's on front (on winter tyres when I got it) and Turbo rangers on rear ('97 so TC only on rear and rear tyres were free!).

My bosses (2 brothers) each own a L322, one is running winter tyres the other has General Grabbers. The winter tyres have worn out and need throwing away but the General's still look like new. The General's have been to France skiing and performed very well.

Would fit AT tyres on any 4x4 if you live in the sticks and don't get gritted roads in the winter. I had Maxxis Maruders tyres on my Shogun sport running 255 55 r18, gave great traction in the snow and dry off roading, not good in the mud but were road tyres.

All you have to remember is you have a very capable vehicle that has a very easy to use traction settings, but when it gets cold, icy and snowy you can pull off and drive better than most others on the road, but when it comes to stopping you have a 2 1/2 ton sled.

Wranglers that are standard on the 19inch wheels are actually reasonably good "off road"

saying that i put a set of brand new contintental sport contact tyres on mine recently, extremely low profile,

i was at the park and this guy was laughing about how "crap" my car would be in rain / snow / wet / off road against his defender.

i wish i could show you some of the hills we've mutilated since :)

I've got cooper ltz on my l322. And ther brilliant, even in the winter/snow/cold/mud/road etc.

I'm really impressed and apparently people get 50k miles out of a set?!

We have done prob 15-20k and they don't look very worn yet!

what did you end up with, i'm thinking of the 275/45/20 cooper zeon ltz or GG AT's on my 04 4.4 l322 for a bit of light mud and snow but mainly road?

I waz looking at geting some bobcat tires on 16" rims for when it snows but all the bobcat tires ive seen, seem to be 16.5" would they fit safely?
I know it sounds extreme but i live a few miles from leeds and bradford airport and reguarly go even ferther into the penines and when it snows up there it realy snows. 5" deep is concidered light! Heavy snow can be upwards of 2foot were even the snow ploughs get stuck!
Plus i can get them used with a good tread left for next to nowt

live in the country with long steep hill into village last year I had and Isuzu Bighorn with scorpians on AT no problems and we had 3 feet of snow. I have heard range rovers are better in snow so I will jus use All Terrain :)

If the tyre is 16.5" they will only fit 16.5" rims. If you fit them on 16" they will not sit central and probably blow out. Will 16" wheels fit over the brakes ? But still think you will be better with AT tyres.

Will 16" wheels fit over the brakes ?.

The ones thats on my car in my pic above are the standerd 16" wheels that it came from the factory with
But im in the prosess of upgrading to 19" ive got the wheels just 2of the tires have had it

keep to 16 inch wheels.

putting larger wheels on is a downgrade in performance for this car.
General Grabber AT tyres really suit the car also.

16" wheels on an L322 ?? Lol

The ops car is a l322 and hes gone for 18" tis my p38 with 16" but shes soon to be wereing 19" which leaves my old 16" to have some extreme off road tires put on for the realy bad weather we get on the moors
