Thanks for going to look. Relayed that to the machine shop.
Yeah in seattle. From UK though. Found a rusted disco 2 that was being parted out on ebay and bought the engine. Had it shipped over with some other things i was shipping over a couple of years ago. Plan is for when the 2.5 NA eventually gives up have the TD5 ready to go in!

So all back from the machine shop. Crank and pistons all back in. However the new stretch con rod bolts i purchased are of inferior quality.. and as i went to torque the first one the head stripped. As you can see in the attached pic the bottom bolts head is less well formed than the top bolt which came off the disassembled engine.
Anyone had this issue? / Know where i can get some replacement quality bolts?
Close to re using originals but strech bolts apparently so shouldnt re use...

Thanks in advance

They certainly look poor quality, don’t spoil all you efforts with bolts like these.
I had a problem with poor head bolts and ended up removing the head and doing it again with new gasket and bolts, I bought German made bolts from land rover direct and they were far superior.
The con rod and bottom bearing cap bolts I bought from Island 4X4 but both those sellers are in the UK, don’t know if they do export.

Yeah was pretty disappointed. Got all mine from turner engineering. Bottom bearing cap bolts were fine just these that were pants!
Been emailing with island 4x4 and they say theirs come from britpart...but never had any reported issues. The pic on their site looks like the bolt at the bottom of above pic so dont really want to order...
Maybe i should try going through a LR dealer in UK to source them...like it sounds you did for the head bolts.
Cheers for the input though!

LR Direct are some kind of independent supplier ( Like Island ) but their parts search is poor and you need part numbers, lately I have had problems with online suppliers and of course everyone says oh yes its due to Corvid 19

I was going to suggest Turner their reputation is high in the UK, if they supplied you with duff bolts then I would contact them and ask why, and tell them that you want better.
I used britpart bolts from island some of the OEM britpart stuff is very good and these bolts seemed fine, but the head bolts I had were also britpart and were very poor, I ende up ordering these and a new gasket: https://www.lrdirect.com/ERR5384-supplied-by-LRDIRECT-branded-OEM.html
Costly mistake

Yeah agreed. Turner are sound.
Pic here just to run this past you chaps for my peace of mind before the head goes back on. Cleaning the pistons I noticed this little scratch on a few of the pistons...Surely cant be the injectors making contact with the crown?? I saw the engine running perfectly before I bought it for the rebuild...and the injector tips all look fine.
Anyone had same experience?
It does beg the question with the head being totally flat and the injector tips sticking out the bottom...and the pistons protruding above the block deck...the head gasket is solely responsible for making sure the tips and crowns never meet...? This has always seemed little strange and risky to me....

Not sure what that is, but if the the injectors were striking the pistons then I'm sure the injector tips would be damaged and they would have let you know.
Why not do the check I did

If you check all the cylinders it tells you how far the pistons extend above the block, you then know if they are all the same and which gasket should be fitted.

Thanks. Yeah done that. only way to know what gasket. Still though...the injector tips stick down a long way from memory. much more than the 24ish thousands the gaskets are responsible for correcting

James posted while I was writing something similar

You could calculate the stack by putting a straight edge across the pistons and find how far the peak in the center is below the pistons crown, then work out how far the pistons extends above the block, then measure on the head how far the injector extends (be very carefull of the tip) and you should be able to get a close approximation of the pistons tip injector clearance by allowing for the head gasket thickness (with some compression)

Surely those scratches have occurred post disassembly, they'd have soot embedded in them otherwise right?

Right, next question in the slowest rebuild in history. Putting head back together…one lash adjuster for valves didn’t have any give/spring it when pushed with my finger. Thought that meant it was no good…ordered a replacement from turner…which seems to also be stuck/frozen with no give or spring to it. Am I mistaken in my diagnosis technique? Do just some lifters respond to different pressure and maybe they are all ok..?
TIA

Head to go on next. Dropped one of the stretch head bolts on garage floor. Book says not to drop. Dont want to order a whole new set. Bolt looks fine. Any input….

I would hazard a guess when the manual says do not drop, they mean do not drop into the cyl head hole which could damage the threads in the block or the fastener itself?
I think this all harks back to the K series engines and their failing head gaskets, same as the early td5 plastic head dowels.
