Just as an aside even if the clutch was slipped this would not be relevant to the failure of the component.

The truth is Defender spares are cheap and often for a good reason, they are crap.

I appreciate all vehicles have there failings and foibles but Land Rover sure made a crap job of making a tough off roader.

Corrosion that starts before the car leaves the factory, lousy build quality, crap driveline and gearbox, rubbish electrics - headlights anyone? Leaks galore ..... I could go on.

Do people think the G Wagen / Toyota Landcruiser owners suffer the same basic issues. My guess is no.

:wtf:

I expect you'll be selling up then and going off to some German iron?

I will take great care to keep from telling my 1954 Series I, 1964 IIA 109 and D110 that they've rotted away and are no longer useful - expecially the D110 with 300,000 kilometers on the clock. I'd hate to give it an inferiority complex.

Been driving Land-Rovers for nearly a quarter-century now and I'll have nothing else...not sure why this random grumbling was necessary.

Simple really .... I just cannot fathom why over the past 25 plus years the defender has been in production they did not iron out the problems. Instead they ignored them or made them worse eg TD5 chassis - thinner steel, same lousy flick of blackboard paint. Another - again TD5, the fuel filler, previously chunky with a removable inner strainer replaced with the cheapest plastic cover and no strainer. I could go on having also owned/sold 30 plus Land Rovers in the past I reckon my annoyance at the contempt Land Rover have had for their customers is pretty valid.

All that said I still enjoy the Defender - completed the better part of 500 miles in her this last weekend - just wish British management had been up to the job. As an aside every Welsh sheep farmer I saw over the weekend (and that was at least 20+) was driving a L200 or Ranger. Defenders were absent entirely.

Thats probably because the mitsi and the ford are way cheaper than the land rover product.

So what are you doing on here?
Go and buy yourself a G Wagon or Land Cruiser then, if you like them better.

Mate at work has an 2001 land cruiser and you wont believe the amount of corrosion on the chassis, in fact on everything underneath, he tells me his wifes one with half the miles is nearly as bad.

Being fair, it's like a Defender. Waxoyl it, spray everything else with grease or something similar, and it will last for ever.
Drive it all through winter every year and never treat the chassis/hose off the mud and salt etc and after 10 years you'll be getting the welder out on either vehicle.

Just ordered a full BP clutch kit for mine, wasn't intending to replace the clutch as i intend replacing this engine with a disco engine soon but as i have just removed this engine to do a couple of other jobs thought i mite aswell replace the clutch as knowing my luck soon after i put the engine back in the clutch will play up, so will see how it goes.

have used BP clutches in the past with no probs but when i did my s11a swb to 200tdi conversion i bought a Delph clutch kit and the clutch plate splines was damaged and wouldn't fit the shaft properly so used my old BP one which was only fitted about 6 months previous and was fine for the 18 months i had it before i sold the s11a :)
