Can anyone help diagnose this:

Driving along and had sudden loss of drive. Here's the info

Engine running, clutch down (feels ok) into gear (any gear)and when i lift the clutch up, there is a sort of cog not engaging noise. I'm hoping its just the clutch splines broken off but the noise sounds geary. I have taken the back plate off and the large cog and shaft aren't turning - not sure what this dignoses . diff lock and hi/lo ratios seem to engage ok. If i put the transfer into nutral, the large cog and shaft at the back of the transfer box does rotate a bit but the noise is still there but slightly less.

I'm guessing its either a garbox problem or clutch problem but how do i tell if the gearbox input shaft is turning?

It it easier to get the gearbox out or engine? I have an engine crane.

is either clutch center ripped out or gearbox buggered ,normally rear splines go between rear mainshaft and transfer box input gear (what you was looking at )but poor lubrication can strip teeth off the input shaft and lay shaft pinion,easiest way to remove box is to hang a chain on drivers side top bolt of transfer box to gearbox with engine crane through passenger door with vehicle jacked up on drivers side front and rear
 
Thanks for your reply. I just had another play with it and it was working fine for a few minutes up the drive, but when I gave it a bit of gas, it felt like it had jumped out of gear and made a gog/grating noise. It hadn't jumped out of gear. I guess this is sounding more like a gearbox problem. The gear selection feels fine.

Not that this helps but I think I have the same problem. But I don't think that it is anything to do with the clutch as in diff lock it's fine. When you are in normal hi box with engine running and in gear does your front Prop shaft spin?
 
you can check gear box by draining some oil out ,box failure usually shows in oil ,in can only e clutch or box if input gear isnt turning behind pto cover you removed with engine running box in gear

No prop shafts turn, the drive doesn't appear to be getting out of the gearbox. Cheers
 
My dad had a problem with the Hi-Lo jumping out, Don't suppose the linkage is loose? The replies above seem more relevant, but just incase

I'm guessing because the shaft at the back of the tranfer box isn't turning, the drive isn't getting as far as the transfer box so the transfer lever is out of the equation. Thats a guess mind but it does sound a bit like a gear not engaging - perhaps a fault with the gear selector. I'll take the box out and see.

Thanks for all your replies. A rivet holding the clutch plates together had failed allowing a cog like thing in the centre of the plate to rotate. Occasionally it would engage and work ok for a bit, and then fail again. It wasn't visible unless the clutch plate was taken off.

Yep, clutch centre. When I took the box out, I was expecting the clutch plate to look mangled but it looked fine so I went and found myself another gearbox. I assumed it was gearbox anyway as it was a very geary noise.

Just before fitting new box, I noticed some tiny springs in the bellhousing so I took the clutch plate off and that when I spotted the failed rivet.

At least I have a spare box now
 
they often break that way hard to see until lying on the floor ,at least jobs sorted now and its good when someone reports back with results
