Currently own a series 3 200tdi truck cab which I love unfortunately the fiance has become pregnant and wants me to get a 'normal' car so I decided on a disco 1 300tdi manual I have about a grand to spend will I get an ok one I don't mind a bit off work but don't want a crap one lol
What are your thoughts?
Tom

HAHA strange question to ask mate but in my opinion yeh they are good, some fender enthusiasts might not agree. I bought one for just over a grand that was sound but at that price could still potentially be a heap so be careful. Check sills, boot floor, wheelarches and all the usuall places. Maybe avoid sunroofs and electric windows but theres loads of info on mending these things on tinternet.

I had a 1985 90 truck cab before and compared to that the disco is a bit like floating in an armchair. Even if it is a 16 year old armchair.

Haha I can imagine may sound stupid but my series is currently 200tdi without turbo is the 300tdi 'fast' so to speak I have only ever drove a series 3 and a few goes in a Capri lol

Yeh the old 90 had a 200tdi fitted and compared to that the disco pulls really well. Will keep going were the 200tdi wanted a lower gear and will keep up on the motorway no problems. As for accelleration that would depend on how much diesel you want to burn. Im sure someone could tell you about increasing power but not something ive done personally.

I like disco 1's
I'm on my third and hope to keep this one, once iv'e finished the work needed.

mmm when will that be?

Love my disco 300tdi! Had them for the last 10 years and have never had a bad one even an MPI.
The missus has had Subarus and currently Focus ST and if we go out and im driving its always in the old disco.
All you have to look for is rot in the normal places and signs of h/g failure and thats about it oh and dont forget if it hasnt got any oil leaks it will need some oil in!

You need to take it off road to find out how good they really are, you cant tell by driving on tarmac. That's when the fun starts and you get the bug.....lol

A Disco TDi 300 manual is an excellent family car that is all-day comfortable and delivers between 25 - 33mpg.

A good auto is also an excellent choice, but it was LR's first foray into electronically controlled diesel engines so some argue it's more complicated. When they run right they are very good though - I had one three years back, did about 20,000mls in her inc a trip to the Sahara and she never missed a beat. MPG over the whole period of ownership was 33.

Mechanically there are no great issues, body however is different, they can and often are rust buckets. They are all at least 14 years old now, so look very carefully.

A good TDi 300 will cost about £1200-1500 and fit your bill perfectly.

Cheers
Dave
