Greetings!
The dreaded time is fast approaching when I shall have to renew the tyres on beloved disco--1996 3.9 v8. I will do all 5 as my cheapskate piecemeal approach over the last 10 years has resulted in an appalling mixture. The best tyres I have had in the past were Avon Ranger which went everywhere (nothing very extreme) and lasted and were quiet.Is there better stuff out there now?

Well I would recommend you look at, starting from the top of the tree:

1. BF Goodrich AT

2. General Grabber AT² or AT

3. ???????????????????????
 
people seem to like coopers too.. i'm interested in the look of maxxis stuff.
 
So they would be classed a poor mans tyre?
Not really just that in my experience (ie. what I've used and what my mates have used) they seem to skate about on the road and not be all that great off it.. the last ATs I put on a Discovery 1 (about 3yrs ago) were Kingpins and I'd rate those way over Insa Rangers. I don't buy any AT now though so there might be newer stuff about..
 
What would you recommend for general laning? That's a bit better then just a pure road tyre

i'd say yes for the at type, and no for the special traks as a lot of people love them for mud, regardless of price

Not had the Insa Rangers, but I have the Saharas,a moderate mud tyre and I have been pleased with them. I haven't noticed a lack of grip off road compared to people I know who have premium tyres, although I am sure they don't last as long as BFG.

I also know folk who have the Special Track, and they really rate them for heavy off-roading, p&p etc. From what I hear they are noisy and short of grip on the road, though.

Bfg a/t last forever
Goodyear Wrangler atr were great on my rrc
Grabber at2 were great on my forester

But these are all a compromise in that I need more road use than off road

Bfg mud were great on my rrc but enhanced under steer and rounding edges off after 20k. Still murdered an impreza on the hartside pass after he took me half way up (cut the last hairpin up a gravel orpa dick dastardly fashion and held him back all the way to alston):mad2:

To be fair, I'm a bit out of date with the new arrivals too

Even the Saharas are much noisier than ATs on the road, especially let down to 24 psi for laning. And they don't do much for acceleration either :eek::D


Another suggestion for the chap who was asking about Insa Ranger! If you are after a good budget AT, have a look at Toyo Open Country, I have them on a set of standard wheels for my 90, and I like them for road and towing :)
 
D2 but I have Avon Rangers on

Seem fine off road and give a better ride than the Khumos it did have (cracking through age)
