I've ordered all of the bits to make a good-quality welding jig to re-align the end flanges of my 300tdi's front axle, and have a professional welder waiting to do the job. Final price will depend on how much time it takes, but as the jig's pretty comprehensive I'm hoping it won't be more than a couple of hours work. Modifying a casing with three degrees, six degrees, or whatever castor correction you want should be cheaper than a set of radius arms and lets you keep your factory chrome swivel balls.

I can post back with a cost once I know it, if anyone's interested?

Axle jig coming together. Vernier scale on each end to set the castor angle. Needs a few stiffeners welding on and it'll be ready to use.

Good work, but why didn't you do it a year ago before I filled the holes in one of mine and re-drilled it?

Nice ... very interested in a price and whereabouts you are, for delivery/collection etc .. ;)

I'm in Derby, though my welding contact's in Leek. Next steps are to get the stiffeners welded on, take some measurements off my vehicle to work out the diff angle I'm after, cut and prep and get it to him. A mutual friend's offered to transport it but is away for a couple of weeks, though he'll probably be back by the time I'm ready!

<edit> Stiffeners welded with, thankfully, minimal distortion. Inclinometer ordered.

No worries, I ain't in a rush .. :)

Inclinometer's here. Jig has been reworked (I assembled the components around the axle and welded it together, temporarily missing the rather important requirement to be able to disassemble it afterwards. This left some locknuts inside the axle where I couldn't put a spanner on them. Ahem. Anyway, now sorted. It also allows the middle section of a rear axle to be used instead of the middle section of a front axle, just in case I might be considering a rear steering axle :)

Not sure yet - will depend how long it takes my contact to do the welding. Would reinforcing the axle casing at the same time as correcting the caster interest anyone?

Sigh. Abrupt change of direction - I got thoroughly and totally sick of the Disco's appetite for steering boxes and gave up on her. Accordingly, I'm not going to be needing either the welding jig or the axle casing I'd prepared ready to weld in it. It cost a fair amount to create but I'd sell it all as a lot for £50 if anyone would like it.

A couple of weeks is fine - would be nice to see it go to a good home and liberate me some garage space while I'm at it. COC is fine. Just to be clear - the axle casing is prepped but not welded.

Apparently not! Anyone else interested in a jig for changing the angle of the ends of a front axle?

Yes!

Give me a week to get back about it ... SWMBO needs to be buttered up .. ;)

Excellent :) I'm out next week (7th-14th) but am available either side of that, depending on how much buttering SWMBO requires :)
