Bigdave2. If you got to have a perkins in a RR then the 4182 was the one to have (sorry jimmymacD), had a ride in one once made me drool it did after the 4236! JimmymacD. think the long stick 5 speed came in 1983ish and the diff lock was operated by moving the high low lever sideways so all is not lost you still might have one. If that other RR has got disco engine and box its got to be worth £500 for those alone.
Cheers Cavey P38, I think I need to change waterpump as well if going along that route. Might be hens teeth? My low/high lever doesn't move sideways, so god knows what gearbox I have? Anyone got a suggestion?
It has,nt got the pull up button next to gear lever like the 4 speed had has it ? thought they did away with it when changed the box. Pretty certain reverse is left and forward on early 5 speed is yours there, only other thing left is crawl underneath have look see if any clues. Think its more than just head change if turbo it, pump will be different and some thing to do with oilways spraying oil under pistons but could be wrong about that bit, just get it up running first see how it goes.
Hi Kds, no diff lock button. I could have later 4 spd box but can't try it until my front calipers appear, just in case it does hit 60 and I need to stop! Just bought engine workshop manual off ebay for a fiver, yippeeeeee!!! I can finaly get the fuel system bled properly. Got the old girl running yesterday to set thermo on kenlowe, switched her off to readjust idle and the bitch won't start, I'm sure there's crap in the lines somewhere as there isn't even a puff of smoke. A bit ****ed as I spent ages bleeding the system and then cold she only started with a squirt of engine start, she won't even do that now. Ho hum.. its all a learning curve. Don't think I will look too hard for turbo parts, disco engine and gearbox looking very tempting as Christmas present to myself. It's so frustrating as the rest of the old gal is good and I just need that reassurance that I haven't bought a bitsa thats going to be more trouble than she is worth, oh the fun of owning a Landrover.
Cheers, JimmymacD

Could always do a bit of ploughing if it has, now if it had the 35x engine in it as well I,d have bought it off him cos I just love the sound of that 3 cylinder engine !
jimmymacD. just had look through some of your previous posts on 4236 and am begining to think I will have to oil the wheels on the old zimmer frame and wheel it over to spilsby for a look at this project of yours.
You can borrow mine Kds, once i've worked out how to use it! Like most Landrover of this age it's been through the hands of countless owners, some good, some not so good. Can't rant at Wife about it as she just glazes over and changes the subject or the headache comes into play. It should be straightforward.. By the end of the project I will be a god and font of all useless knowledge but until then I will squirm like a useless
T%#t in the pit of ignorance! Picked up bump stops, p/steering pump seals and clutch seal kit, fit them and I will feel my life is not wasted.
I'm near Spilsby if you ever want a cuppa and a laugh Kds, though I will probably be out ploughing... hmm... tax exempt, if I stick a sprayer on the back I could run the RR tax free and possibly MOT free!
If you had old girl running should,nt be any need bleed system again, have you change fuel filter they can let air back in if not seated properly, how about lift pump? you had top off it clean crap out the two valves? sent you a pm I think, not good at this computer stuff!
Had old girl running last night after bleeding the system with manual in hand. Lift pump has had new valves and I replaced fuel filter as the old one was full of crap and water. Can't say I feel confident that she will start today as I feel there is air getting in somewhere! May have to check tank and replace lift pump with new to make 100% sure.
cheers, JimmymacD.
Depending on age of tank it might have drain plug in bottom of it, if it has then drop it out see what in it. did it start without using the flame assist thing ? And this might seem silly but what colour is the engine ?
Hi Kds, bled the system again and found that top of lift pump was letting air in so made small rubber washer to fit and re-bled. Started with engine start, it tried starting on preheat. Will try engine cold this morning and fingers crossed it will start OK. If not then back to plan A and emptying the tank. Engine is red. Got your text, will give you a call on Wed/Thur pm.
cheers, JimmymacD
Cant think they had non return any where, often had trouble with filter letting air in after I changed it (bloody thing!), red engine now thats a new one on me not seen one that colour. Wed/thurs pm good for me no grandson (not that I mind looking after him its just that at 18 months old he doesnt know much about engines yet even if his dad is an AA man).
Going to have another crack at it today. I will check the line from tank and all connections. Will take sender out of tank and just check though I don't think there is a problem in the tank or it would run badly. When running the engine is fine and ticks over no probs, it just doesn't want to start from cold and there are no puffs of smoke from preheat or exhaust, so a fuel starvation problem. Brakes are a no show, DHL says they ended up at an address in Sheffield? Seller is sending another pair asap via Parcelforce. Had bought clutch master cylinder repair kit from Famous Four and then found it to be a brake repair kit when I got home. Oh bollocks! Can't justify the 50 mile round trip so I will buy off interweb.
Cheers, JimmymacD:doh:
