been running a 325tds now for a fewk on a 75% mix in favour of veg and apart from filter changes its all good!!

we know about the tdi's its the 2.5 beemer lumps we are after.

All P38a diesels have the Bosch Rotary Fuel Pump as above, this means that as long as the viscosity is good (warm the oil/blend it) it will work fine.

)personally i have had to change too many pumps because of veg oil (mainly used oil)on various cars too risk it in my own (and i have got a spare pump)for whatever reason it just doesnt seem to lubricate the pump properly dont know why wether it is too thick i am not sure but the pump is lubricated by the diesel,you can legally use 2500 litres per year of home produced biodiesel without paying duty on it (again how will they know)i suppose a 50% mix would be classed as biodiesel ,most of the cars i put the pumps on had been running oil long term.I also look after a fleet of euro courier vans and have noticed lately the ones predominantly in france the diesel is a lot thicker than ours this raises the question that some of there fuel stations are mixing anyway .

I ran my m reg p38 bm 2.5 on pure veg oil for about 3 months, and it ran no problems.
It started fine, and runs cleaner out the pipe, and gives no running concerns.
However, it may be my imagination, but i don't think i get as many mpg. Maybe it's because I love making the people behind think they're in a chip shop !!
Bear in mind though, that it has to be veg oil such as rape seed. If you start experimenting with sunflower, then you're looking at problems with high explosive rates etc.
However, now the supermarkets have got wise, and the price has rocketed.

...yes and you'd think they'd keep prices lower to get more sales in veg oil, but no priced themselves silly. 6 months ago £1.88 3 Litres at Asda now £3.49.

So £3.49 for 3 litres = 1.16 per litre, diesel £1.21 at my local garage is it worth it?!?!
Running on veg. Oil, why not think outside the box, run it with LPG. I have a red Calor gas bottle in the back, with an automatic regulator, piped through under the mats, to a tap a the side of my left leg, across the trans tunnel, behind the glove box, drill through the bulkhead, drill into the air filter box, attach threaded pipe/hose connector. Start the engine, turn on a little gas, if to much the engine will splutter, blip the throttle & reduce gas, bit of practice & its fine. Got all the gear from a plumbers shop, re. gas fires. Next purchase is an auto shut of valve from a petrol/lpg car, wire this up to the cig-lite & it works it through the ignition. (you are only putting enough gas in to burn the size of a candle flame) With a little gas in the air you are now upping the combustion ration (fuel/air/gas)
Removes turbo lag, better low down pulling & 37mpg on a run, 30/32mpg around town & some decent get up & go. Been running it like this for four years now.

Noticed in Tesco's today, and they had BOGOF on 3 litre veg oil so £2.53 for 6 litres. Runs out today, though you can order up to 99 on tesco.com online....
If I went down that route and having read this post and others, I realise pre-heat/second tank are good solutions, but are they necessary?
Furthermore, how long would I run the girl before swapping out the fuel filter? Last swapped August '99

I have done veg oil for a long time keep putting some injector cleaner through it say once a month diesel only mix with the cleaner. my mix is 70% diesel 30% veg oil, I have never got to like the stink it makes yak. 30% of £2000 a year spent on fuel is £600 saving. I have seen some enging very coked up running on oil so a light mix will burn better, & the cleaner will keep burning that carbin away. when my engine needs replaceing I will have a good look to see if the engine as suffed at all cos of the oil. ho & i have a heated filter.

they can work out how much you used from mot milage figures and I'm sure they will come up with a figure u won't be able to argue with

Tell them at various points you ran out of oil and had to use straight dino diesel but can't remember when that happened. Probably only used 2,440 litres or so......

As long as the engine is not a common rail you can easily run it on veg oil, Definetly Bosch pumps are better equipped for it....
I run mine in cold months with a blend of 50% regular diesel, 40% WVO (Waste Vegetable Oil) and 10% RUP (Regular Unleaded Petrol) plus I add a bit of Vegiboost which is a cetane enhancer.
In the warmer months (read from April to September the mix is 25% 70% and 5%. Although last July and most of August I drove the odd 6,000 miles on 90% WVO and 10% RUP.
Petrol helps reduce the viscosity of VO.
Rapeseed oil is best followed by other vegetable oils.....avoid sunflower and palm...the latter solidifies at relatively high temperatures and blocks fuel lines.....If you have oil central heating as well it's worth buying a processor because homemade biodiesel for central heating pays no duty whatsoever.....and 2500 litres will power you Land Rover for 15,000 miles.
In my experience I found that the engine runs quieter, the CO2 emission is neglegible...my MOT station thought that their machine wasn't working when they put the sensor up my exhaust pipe....and (put my green hat on) I am being very sensible in saving precious resources, and the cost of the stuff can be anywhere from 10p per litre to a maximum of 50p per litre, in this price I include my time to prepare the blends and all the ingredients and the added cost of changing fuel filters every 2,000 miles.
The downside is that it returns slightly less miles to the gallon, from 30 down to 28, but considering the saving it's well worth it, I am saving a minimum of £240 per month!
