I thought if it was being used as a trailer it didn't need to have tax or test  ?

Was going to borrow an A-frame and low range it slowly over the fell road to the V8 garage

If it's on a public highway it needs tax, mot and insurance.

Fair enough, I was told that as long as it was a trailer rather than being towed it was fine. Or can you not bung trade plates on it to get round that as well ?

Might see if I can borrow some as I'd be recovering it to the garage that would end up storing it/renting me a ramp etc to change the gearbox over once it runs plus I'm allowed to store it on their lot and tinker there

It can be driven on trade plates but obviously will still need insurance

Makes more sense now, so the only way you can actually properly transport an uninsured car with no mot and tax is on a full length trailer ?

Although I'm sure many will use a tow pole etc

Yep. Technically a recovery vehicle (unless 3.5 ton or under) cannot recover it either unless it is running on an operators licence. A recovery vehicle cannot recover a non broken down vehicle either unless on O licence or under 3.5 tons.

many still use ropes...... and then wonder why they get stopped by plod.

Wait  so if its private and under 3.5 used as a trailer i.e. on a tow pole or suspended on an A-frame thats fine ? But over that and for professional use it has to be taxed, insured, mot'd or on a full flat bed ?

Surely if you're going down the M6 in your truck it'd be easier for Stu to meet you at the junction ? just a thought :)

I probably won't know until the day before but I'm guessing it will be weds or thurs.

If you guys can keep an eye on the threads cos I'll post it up as soon as I know the day.

No. Recovery vehicles over 3.5 ton are taxed as 'recovery'. Because of this they can only recover brokendown and accident damaged vehicles. To recover non brokendown vehicles the truck has to be taxed as a goods vehicle and run on an operators licence.

thanks for all the offers guys, my geography of the north is too poor to tell if we are close to a workable plan? :p :D
