My reasoning for the question...

Now, could be genuine and waiting for documents to come through for the new plates, but, then, why fit them until the paper work came through? And, i think the stuck on one is personalised anyway too?

The number plate fell off at a later stage too, followed him on and off for a good 30 miles this morning

I don't think the plate underneath is correct, the last part looks like it has been messed with. The 'I' in 'IAL' looks like another letter with part taped over to me.

Looks very dodgy, hope it's not nicked :(

Edit - just put those plates into euro car parts site and...

X33 KAB comes up as a defender TD5 - that isn't a TD5 is it?

L90 IAL isn't registered to anything so may not exist!

The "sticker" bit is the double sided tape in all four corners designed to hold the other number plate on.

I am not expert enough to tell you if it was a TD5 or not - he hit 80 at one point though, so, it wasn;t a 2.5N/A!!!

The fact that the L90 IAL isn't registered makes it more confusing though - if it also was a blue 90 i'd be straight onto the police, but, as it's not registered it goes back to maybe they were new plates not quite registered yet...

Driver looked "normal" - i know this is a huge streotype but, he wasn't your typical "thug" you see in the paper when people are done for landy theft...

It looks like a TDI to me although I'm not an expert either! I don't know if reg plates have the letter I in them or not..

And I just tried L90 JAL which is also not registered to anything. May be worth ringing in if there's a small chance it could reunite someone with their Landy.

L90 JAL no data found the plate is on retention at dvla

X33KAB is a blue td5 2001 the defender in picture is also a td5

Probably selling the 90 and keeping his private plate an couldn't be bothered to unscrew the old plate till time of sale

Just noticed the round tail lights which would indicate it's a TD5. You're probably right about the private plate

defo td5 , crossmember, round fog and reverse lights, towbar arrangement, just see the tank and the exaust

Could the swinging plate be obscuring another digit? I can just see the start of another digit upright

Maybe L901 JAL or L904 JAL something?

No, the plate fell off whilst I was behind him... It was defo L90

The J or I are up for dispute but the rest was AL

On that style of plate it cannot be an I only used in NI plates it is a J you can clearly see the turn of the bottom of he J just before the tape starts.

Just remember the worse the criminal the more ordinary they look, that is why they are able to get away with things!:frown:

I would have phoned the police ,for that you are allowed to use a phone while driving in an emergency , better than not then discovering some poor sod has lost his landy

I would have called the police at the next stopping place. They won't mind if they check it out and there's nothing wrong. They may still be interested as you have the proof of the reg plate coming oft to display another.
