Hi, I recently bought a second hand diesel l322 vogue which has been fitted with 20" 7 spokes on 255/50/r20 tyres. I have noticed this vibration and am constantly putting it into neutral when sat at lights.

Is this vibration dangerous for its health or just an annoyance as I would rather not have to revert back to 18" wheels.
You should always put it into neutral when waiting at lights....not only is it in the handbook in bold print....but also there is a thing with the L322 torque convertor - don't ask me the technical side of things but I am sure it is something to do with there is no pressure relief valve or constant flow or something that means the Torque convertor is always fighting with itself hence the vibration - hopefully James Martin may pop in as he was the one that mentioned it IIRC....

Always Neutral - not just the Diesels but my petrol vibrates lightly when just held on the brakes for longer than 20-30 seconds....

Just found the thread I was refering to...it wasn't JM it was Qwertz who made the quote but re-reading it it does say a tech bulletin from 1991 on the ZF 4HP22/24 so maybe it has been sorted by now....

I believe it uses ZF 4HP-22/24 gearbox and there was a service bulletin issued by BMW in 1991 # 24 01 91 (3196) which says "The problem is that after starting the engine, and selecting any gear, forward or reverse, the front clutch pack in the transmission is pressurized, and that pressure is not bled off when park or neutral are selected. "

Is this a concern for P38 owners I don't know. It would be good to know if the problem was addressed in later years of ZF 4HP-22/24 production.

I would still select Neutral - as it does say it in the Handbook

91 is pre electronic, I don't think it's a requirement on the HP22/24e, I don't think it's in my handbook but I will check:)

Yes but that is for the 5HP box is it not or the crap GM unit?
Doesn't specify in the handbook - it does have all the information ofr the Diesels in their too - so I can only assume it would be the same for both....

Considering it says '...always select netrual when idle for a period....' I will do so when you think of the cost of a new Box 'O Cogs....

yea i allways put mine into neutral when waiting at lights. just dont like to hold the engine on the clutch. just like you slipping the clutch in a manual i guess ??

I have 20" 7 spoke vogue alloys on my TD6 and have no problems with vibration when stationary did have a slight issue at about 55mph but it was a tracking /balancing issue.
i would have thought as long as the wheels are the same rolling diameter there shouldn't be that much to worry about

It creates heat in the transmission fluid.

L322 Handbook...!!

You are quite right, it's in the P38 handbook too. Not something I have ever done with any of my recent auto's. On my old Daimler V8 it was necessary as it was hard work holding it on the brakes against the creep. Virtually no movement on the P38 so never bothered.:)
