Weird one...

Was reading the Haynes manual last night (as you do) and it said ACE equipped cars have a double steering fluid reservoir (with two caps - it showed a photo). My Adventurer-spec TD5 is supposed to have ACE but only has a 'normal' single steering reservoir? Do you think this was a later mod?

Anyone else got a 2000 Adventurer-spec to compare?

My 2001 Adventurer wasn't fitted with ACE. It wasn't standard fit on that model and I have no idea if it was an option. The easiest way to tell if it's fitted is by looking for the ACE warning light on the dash when you switch ignition on.

Unless the ACE warning light has failed ??

It's VERY easy to see if you have ACE fitted, look underneath and see if all the bits in the attached pic are there (or not !!) :D

If you haven't got it, personally I wouldn't even think about getting the parts, it'll cost you an arm, leg and probably an ear :( unless you can find a salvage one and swap it all over, but you'd still need the LR stealer to programme the BCU and set it up properly)

(sorry about the quality of the pic, had to reduce it to get it to upload, If you need a clearer one, pm me your e-mail and I'll send a PDF)

Many thanks...

Now this is weird. I'll have to go and check the ACE light - I don't think it comes on. I know I have all of the torsion bars, anti-roll bar links etc. But I guess they would be there even without ACE.

I don't think I have all of tose pipes on the offside though.

 Bummer, thought it had ACE!

This site shows it as standard from Oct 2000 - Wonder if mine just missed the boat then? But that would yours (Mike) should have it!

Nevermind, if it turns out the car hasn't got ACE afterall, that's incredibly good handling as standard!!

(PS - Thanks for taking the effort to post the pic - very useful!)

Yes, they are standard fit with or without ACE :)

Mine hasn't got it, and it's still pretty good, and I have heard that the ACE ones are not quite so good off road because:

1, the're heavier :(
2, axle articulation is slightly restricted :(

And as a consolation - there's a LOT less to go wrong (not that LR's EVER go wrong - do they

You're welcome, that's what we Landyzoners do :D

Compared to a series 1 the 2 handles very well, even without ACE. When I test drove mine I assumed it had ACE, but the lack of a warning light and no air pipes on front chassis members proved me wrong. Mine was a 2001 on a Y plate.

And mine is a 2004 ('04 plate) and still hasn't got it (when mine was built, there were only two models left in production the Pursuit, and the Landmark (efectively a S and ES) and I wasn't gonna cough up an extra £5k to get 2 sunroof's that leak, Leather that's cold in winter and hot in summer, and ACE that would be more to go wrong

My 'Pursuit' is still going well with 97k clocked so far . . . :)

They are not air pipes but hydraulic,it should have 2 caps on the reservoir and when you start up the light goes red then amber, there is also a hydraulic block on the o/s chasis by the driver door.also makes a bit of noise when going round a corner.:)

Thanks again for your help, chaps. No ACE it is then!

Would be really cheesed off if I wan't so happy with the handling anyway! Like you say, just one less thing to go wrong

One acronym gone. That just leaves SLS, SRS, EBD, ABS, TC then?

I think JW realises he ain't got it on his, but I still think it was a bit of a gimmick - LR using the Disco 2 for experimental stuff ready for newer models planned in the future (Disco 3 and gaylander 2 etc )

That wasn't my experience. Never thought about the weight difference, but I doubt it's significant. I found ACE more an aid off road than on, as to compensate for its absence the none ACE ones appear to have stiffer anti roll bars, so are far more prone to lifting wheels. I noticed it as soon as I took a non ACE one off road, although I didn't appreciate the cause straight away.

My opinion is only based on that of my own disco (non ACE) and a very similar one with ACE :D

Mine seemed to perform better and was certianly more 'agile' maybe it was just my perception, but we swopped over and I definitely think my non ACE Disco was better off road . . . :)

In fairness tho, mine has air suspension, the other was springs all round, so dunno if that would have made any difference

I would expect that to make a difference, I thought ACE was only available with air.
I've never driven one with steel all round so I don't know how that compare.
I was in the lucky situation of taking them to exaxtly the same place time and time again, I'd go for ACE every time, but I know you are not alone in your views

No, mine ('99) has coils and ACE. I reckon you're better off without - can be a huge bill if it goes wrong, as well as stranding you wherever you are (amber light OK - red light = DON'T drive or the bill will be large).

I had to replace the whole ace system in my old discovery £1200 to replace! My new discovery does'nt have it and i see very little difference, only a little more roll but frankly £1200!!!!! better off without it.

I am! but whoever buys my old one is going to be better off!!! As it's not only the ACE i have had replaced. :). brakes, exhaust, airbags........ Not a good buy and i was stupid enough to spend about £4000 putting it right. BUT i am still a Land Rover fan and have bought a newer model (2004 Landmark - no ace!)

still my old one passed it's MOT with flying colours the other day :D

That sort of spending seems to go with the vehicle, unless you do everything yourself - I doubt if your outlay is that unusual. But that's the reason Discos are cheap, so it's not all bad. AND they always seem to pass the MoT - never had one fail yet (cross everything at this point and touch fake wood veneer):)
