Disclaimer,

I made the mistake of asking about these on another forum, and, despite my best efforts, it just turned into some dick waving contest concerning regulations. To be absolutely clear - my defender is only ever used on a private race track in a pressurized environment on the moon, so your opinion on what may, or may not, comply with whatever earthly regulation you choose to quote is of no concern.

probably all out of the same factory in china. Im aware that some have writing on the lenses, some dont, the symbols may, or may not be correct, they may do this, that or the other, but, again - on the moon, your opinion of these things is irrelevant.


Im really just wanting to know if anyone has a set fitted, and what they are like, both in respect to general use, and beam pattern?
 
Led threw some shadows on our racer. But we rattled a few bulbs in the spots so there were advantages.
They were a differnt designed lens to these.

Mostly im wanting to reduce the amps on the loom. I know about localized relays, but ive never found them to change things significantly, whilst LED run way cooler.
 
I know not necessarily what you are looking for but I run the trucklite led headlights on mine which I think these are a possible copy of. I know they are very pricey by comparison but I chose them because of all the regulation quoting you encountered previously (I had the same thing when I was looking) and these actually seem to obay the regulation and be compliant.

One thing in wills at I noticed with the spins similar to @Hicap phill that they do have a very definite beam pattern which has no fade into the wider area but instead is a hard cutoff at the edge of the beam meaning it feels like a shadow.

Ran relays(solid state) expensive but reliable on racer
Put relays in road motor & switch’s were cooler with standard lights.
Have you thought about a light bar?
As its position is roof height it pick up ditches/ridges easier.
If you have a MSA checker who is keen more than 2 spotlights can be frowned on..

This is exactly why I don't use LED's.
In winter we can often get slushy/sticky, snow which builds up on the headlamps slowly cutting out the light.
You don't notice at first but after a while you realise that you can't see into the next bend let alone where the sides of the road are.

Relays do reduce power on the loom, as in the correct configuration, the loom/switches carry less than 0.3A and a separate, correctly rated cable, carries the 15A or so for the headlights etc.
The headlamps dont get any brighter (unless the original loom was absorbing voltage/current), to do that you need higher wattage bulbs, which brings us back to the regulations again.

LED headlights are an unneccesary waste of money (IMO).
LED sidelights, indicators and brake lights work the clarity they bring to the party is well worth it.

Legality can be discussed, at length (as is so frequently proven on many many forums). I mean people make their whole lives income from debating the legality of certain issues. There is a whole trade around the area.

Sometimes, however, you want to ask a technical question WITHOUT a load of amateur solicitors all weighting in with their own special interpretation of the law, which may, or, indeed, may not be accurate.


Sometimes you ask people not to, as in the case here, but, so frequently, people, such as yourself, just cant resist.


...and now youre going to come back with some other line, from your arm chair, about why your view of something is so much more important, and we will go on and on about that, when, really, all i want to know is about the lights.

wtf you never asked anything "technical".

On both forums you asked if anyone is running these, as you clearly want to fit and use them on your ROAD going Defender. Which means the legality of them is not only pertinent, but also part of their technical spec.

I have the same trucklite and the same applies to me verry bright but a sharp cut off I got over this by fitting driving spots this was a vast improvement as thay are switched sepratly on main beam and angeled slightly up and do not blind on coming traffic if I remember to dipp 😯but a vast improvement of the standard set-up

Do you mean sharp cut off on field of vision when driving on full beam?

The bit thats actually of most interest to me is the pattern / cut off on dip beam. A lot of the reviews of various headlights seem to find problem in this area - that the dip beam strays up, out of where you want it to be.


I dont actually do much driving at night so full beam side view (if thats what you meant by cut off) isnt too important to me, but, country to popular belief, im not an arse, so would like the dip to work nicely.

I mean on dipped beam, and I mean the cut off in front of you more than to the side. Although it must be throwing light out as you can see cats eyes in front of you for a much longer distance than you can see the beam pattern, the beam pattern seems to have a very hard cut off at the front edge rather than a slow fade into darkness.

I am not sure on full beam as I have 5x LED hybrid fog/spots on the bull bar and 6x long range spots on the roof that all come on with main beam. Night time becomes daytime, my setup with additional lights is bordering on too bright as where they have put in new signage around me for HS2 I get a lot of reflective glare form the signs, and if you have to turn them off it is like the lights have been switched off entirely by comparison, but I do a lot of night time country driving so they overall the setup works for me.

the pattern on main and dip seems to me to have a straight cut of line bright up to the line night the other side you can not push the line further in front due to the dip beam then being to high and dazzling on coming traffic that's the reason I fitted driving spots side pattern to me is fine that's whith the trucklite not sure about other makes
 
Just saying. I have been sitting as a magistrate in court for donkeys years and many of the 4*4 near me have a wide variety of extra lights fitted. Roof, nudge bar, bumper, in grille etc. never ever seen a case in court. Doesn’t mean you will pass an MOT but that depends on who does it, what they know and who you know.
