the best way to lower the engine noise is to not start it by the way, that way its lovely and quiet;)
 
i think u will find that at some point someone has taken the gearbox out and not replaced the soundproof mat under the console, on top of gearbox maybe they dont half make a sound if its not put in properly :D
 
Fill the cabin with builders spray foam -

be sure to be in the vehicle so that there will be space to sit and drive once the foam has set fully ... :D ;)
 
If it were mine I'd replace all the foam under the carpets, bonnet, wings, and elsewhere as I find where I'd removed it from I'd also go back to AT's, or even (spit!) road tyres, softer springs, new bushes, replace egr, centre silencer, repair rear exhaust pipe and back box, and not drive like I stole it.

As it's yours, then it depends ..
