Go for it. I filter our old chip fat and use that I'm sure it runs better for it. Do a search there's loads of stuff on this subject.
 
My next door neighbour use veg oil in his import people carrier, swears it runs sweeter, more power, more economical as well, he travels to France a lot in it.

To me it just smells like one of those donut stalls you get at the coast etc....
 
nice one , just wonderin if anyone here used it in a td , ive heard the injector pumps in tds dont like veg oil too much.
 
aye yer right. tesco's are installing fish oil pumps next to the derv pump at all their stores. only draw back i can forsee is its gonna be like the pied piper but with cats instead of kids
 
For these engines ideally you want to match the viscosity, so for example if you were going to use all veg oil you would need to thin it a bit with kero or something so that the pump was still being lubricated well.

Pure veg would not be a great lubricant for the pump at all.

Up to 50% would be fine on its own, the veg oil has more energy per lb than diesel but a low cetane rating (ignition factor) and the diesel will keep the cetane rating up at a decent level.
 
Neighbour reckons that you do need a good fuel/lift pump for veg oil, suppose because it is thicker than diesel, he does not thin his down, but dont know what sort of fuel pump he has, ie mechanical or electric..
 
My mate runs his astra on a 50/50 mix of veg oil/diesel, or sometimes veg oil/heating oil. Works fine with no mods of any kind. Just smells like a chipshop when you're behind him. Problem is if you do it above board and declare what you use for duty, there's no financial incentive to do it.
 
Its not the lift pump really, its the injection pump that gets hammered because of its small clearances, it is immersed in diesel all the time, and thats what lubricates it, thicker oil is not going to run into smaller spaces as well. Running veg oil neat is not a good idea for the pump, also it will lead to bore glazing, so a good run with pure DERV and run it hard is a good idea every now and again.
 
I run about 30 - 50% veg oil with diesel.
Runs fine with no problems during the winter. This will be the first summer.
You do get the faint smell of BBQ when driving though.
Tesco do 10 litres of veg oil in a plastic and cardboard container for 53p per litre in the international food isle.

A mate of mine runs his diesel frontera(never mind) on pure veg oil. It dont like starting to well first thing but once fired up no real probs. I have been running my 200 tdi on a 50/50 mix new veg oil & diesel for about 3 weeks now. Although you can smell the difference (frying chips or pop corn) ive had no probs as of yet.
 
No wantin to be left oot, ma mate has run soobaroo pick up on 100% chip oil for 8 years withoot any problems. It does get filtered to take the fag ends and stuff oot o it. He does it legit, well kind of, he might do more miles than he declares. ;) But then his missus has a chip van and is comin doon wi fat which she was havin to pay for a contractor to take away so they win all roond.
 
The was as I see it is if you can get used chip oil or suchlike for nothin it's probably worth doing. If you have to buy it, it's more hassle than it's worth. My mate gets about 20 litres a week used for nothin, declares the duty on that, then he might possibly use some new stuff from lidl or somewhere that might just slip into his tank without the duty man noticing, thus making it financially worth it but not 100% above board;)
