just returned home after a lovely drive along the coast,a noise started up best described as a scraping when taking the foot off the accelerator in gear and when changing down gear(but not when changing up!) with my limited knowledge could it be the flywheel not disengaging.
the scraping slows down when slowing down and disappears when placed in neutral and allowed to coast,if it is the clutch how easy for a novice to fix, cheers

what happens if you try to accelerate in 4th from slow speed? if it is the clutch its a g/box out job ( or engine out) its usually best to just drop the box unless you have an engine hoist. for a novice about two days at a rough guess.

mmmm! does it accelerate as normal or do the engine revs increase withouit a coresponding increase in road speed? and how sure are you that the noise is coming from clutch region?

accelerates as normal,no problems there,i was making an educated guess on the clutch, but if anyone can shed any light on it please feel free,ta

Have a look at the oil in the diffs (see if there`s any metallic bits in it), or if there`s any in it! Likewise oil from gearbox and transfer case. Sounds a bit like a diff starting to misbehave.
Have a look at hub end-float as well.
If the noise reappears every time you press the clutch, whether the beastie is m oving or not, then it`s engine thrust washers - easy job. Doesn`t sound like a clutch problem.
