For a few weeks now while driving my P38 i have been getting a vibration to the vehicle while driving. If i release the acclerator it would stop.

Anyway, today while driving doing approx 50mph bringing the speed up i heard a bang, obviously pulled over straight away.

I discovered the blades on viscous fan had shattered which has burst the radiator.

Both of the above were changed for new only 3 months ago.

The Range Rover can not be driven now as the water is ****ing out of the radiator.

Has anybody any idea at all why this could of happened ??
 
hi, was the water pump changed at same time ?
as i have just heard from a fellow p38 owner who has had the the exact same thing
happen to him however it was the waterpump , that has split in two the front has came off the water pump causing the viscous fan to embed itself into the the new radiator
so you might want to check your water pump

Thanks for the reply but the water pump was also changed the same time as the viscous fan & radiator.
The viscous fan hasn't moved it's still in place but the blades all sheared off.
It really is a mystery on why this has happened & it's going to be costly yet again to replace all this & trying to find out what is causing the vibration.

No crystal ball unfortunately however for what its worth my guess that when the fan was removed to change the water pump one of the fins was damaged or even broken off. Result is an imbalance in the fan which caused your vibration and ultimately the fan to self destruct.
 
what make is the viscous fan? i had 2 britpart viscous fans on my old dse fail within minutes of the engine running, the first one lost its oil fan went out of balance caught the rad shroud and fired a blade out of the engine bay, second one didnt work at all!
in the end after harrassing island 4x4 they started stockeing oem viscous fans which even turn up stamped with landrover on the blades and never had a problem again.
check for an oil type liquid around the nut which screws onto the water pump

It was a 'britpart' viscous fan that i purchased.
I'll buy the OEM fan from island 4x4 which is where i buy the majority of the parts i need & will buy yet another radiator.

I will check for liquid around the nut on the water pump too.

I'll start stripping it apart again this coming weekend.

Once i get that sorted i shall have put it into Landranger in Deeside to see if they can find whats causing the vibration.

Been having 'vibe' issues with mine since I got it. It's not a 'shake' as such, more of a 'buzz' from the engine, that can be heard (and felt) through the whole car. Worst at idle and at around 1500rpm, and I was wondering if the viscous fan could be to blame?

It appears to function normally. When first starting from cold and accelerating away, fan can be heard 'whooshing', that lasts about 60 seconds, then quiet, unless the engine starts to get warm, in which case 'whooshing' can be heard again when accelerating (ie, it appears to be doing it's job as advertised).

However, when I turn the fan by hand, with engine off and cold, there is a bit of 'resistance' at first, then it starts going 'easy-hard-easy-hard-easy-hard' until you've given it a good couple of minutes turning it... Then it's just constantly easy. The 'easy-hard' resistance transition seems to occur at the same place around the fan's circumference... If any of that makes sense!!! When I say 'hard', I don't mean it is actually difficult to turn... Just that the resistance seems to momentarily increase at around the same place in it's rotation. And it's not catching on anything, as far as I can see.

Any thoughts?
 
A little update:

I emailed Britpart & told them what had happened & if nothing could be solved between ourselves then i would be going to trading standards with photographic evidence. I also said i wanted my money back as i wouldn't be using another Britpart & also reimbursing for the brand new radiator that the viscous fan had burst too.

On the same day of them receiving the email i was telephoned by themselves asking if i could send what was left of the fan to them for investigation which i have done.

So will await for what they come back to say to me & will take it further if i don't get the answers i am looking for which is my money back for both parts.

change it it should have smooth resistance

I'm not sure that was the best course of action. This kind of up front concern from the manufacturer is often just an attempt to get their hands on the evidence so it can be quietly lost thus leaving any investigation quite impotent. It might have been better to suggest it was sent to an independent investigator.
 
I changed mine for the one that is used in the RR Classic 300 tdi.
Its the same unit but the in one used in the 300 tdi you can change just the fan blades or the viscous coupling depending on what goes wrong.
In the P38 viscous fan the bolts are soldered so you have to replace the whole unit.
 
Scooby: If you are not 100% satisfied with whatever compensation ****part comes up with i will suggest you go to trading standards armed with all the evidence included what others here have experienced with similar part, shame you sent the fan back but at least you have photos.
I went to trading standards recently and they got in touch with seller and at least i got all the money back but not labor done by myself, would have covered if i had paid someone else to do it.
