I know that the subject has been done to death, but because of this there is lots of conflicting information on this and other forums.

I am considering converting my 110’s Salisbury back axle from Drums to Discs and want to retain as many existing parts as possible. My 110 has Wolf wheels and I am not bothered about fitting alloys, so don’t need the later narrow hubs.

My understanding is that the basic Salisbury axle casing is the same for drum and disc brake axles, so I presume that it is possible to convert to discs using entirely standard parts, I am not keen on fabricated spacers etc.

I suspect that many differences between the parts for the two types of axles are designed to allow fitment of the later narrower alloy wheel type hubs, for example the shorter half shafts.

If I use the wider front hubs from an early 90/110 on the rear, can I retain my existing stub axles, half shafts and drive flanges, then fit standard 110 discs and callipers with the standard FTC3306 calliper bracket? Or am I missing something? Why do some conversions require a 6mm spacer?

same case and you can just fit the later disc axle parts which are shorter shafts narrower hubs and flanges, never tried fitting other parts

Well I finally have all the bits (early hubs on Salisbury axle). The last bits are the discs but as usual people have different views, depending on experience.

I'll probably wait until spring then fit the bits and assess the need for spacers between the caliper brackets and axle.

What are your views on discs?

Also, if the spacers are based on standard rear disc (290x59mm) can't a different disc (290x53mm) be used this omitting the need for the spacer? Thoughts?

Because I’m tight. I butchered the front hubs of an old 90. The rear discs and callipers of a disco 1. Made a bracket for the caliper.

I also used front hubs for my conversion but did use the correct rear callipers. For my conversion I used these parts:
  • Option 2 is to use a pair of front 90/110 hubs (used), stub shafts (FRC3132), discs (90/110 discovery fronts), calliper brackets (FTC3306), a home made 6mm spacer and callipers (STC1269 L/H)(STC1268 R/H).

Do you know the dimensions of the discs you used?
I do not, they came already fitted tot he s/h front hubs I used! But they will have just been the standard solid discs fitted to early 90/110. I understand your question about using different discs to eliminate the spacer, but I wanted to keep standard land rover parts on mine as it makes future work/getting parts abroad much easier in the future.

Understood. I've asked an engineering company for a price to make the standard spacers for early (70mm X 298mm) discs.

If they are a decent price, I'll have a few made and pass them on.

Are you talking about the 6mm calliper bracket spacers? You can make your own very easily with some plate once you have the brackets to use as a template. Seen on the diesel Jim tech thread here LINK
