My 2000 110 TD5 has a metalic rattle when I take my foot off the power. During acceleration things seem fine (maybe slightly more vibration than usual) but as soon as I coast there seems to be this rattle, almost like someone's put a ballbearing in the gearbox. As soon as I dip the clutch the sound goes (which makes me think gearbox)!
Any ideas or previous experiences??
 
I had a metallic squeak once, accompanied with quite a thump when putting the power on. That turned out to be the u-js. One of them had sufficiently destroyed itself so that it was wearing away the prop bolts.
 
its usualy a front uj that rattles .sounds like a gearbox problem . just pulling on the propshaft wont show up a knackered uj you should drop one end off and then you canfeel any wear quite easily!

Unfortunately I'm far from a mechanic and the shear thought of 'dropping' something leaves me with a cold sweat!
I know, I know......what am I doing owning a Landy, well I love the thing! Is it worth dropping it down to a garage for a check then?
 
If they used britpart hd clutch kit the release bearings are really rattly and noisy but still work ok, mine sounded awful after it was done mate. Does your td5 have dual mass flywheel and was it changed with the clutch?
 
Only had it for 5 months so no work done on it that I know of. The problem only occurs when in gear and coasting without power. As soon as the clutch is depressed, and drive therefore removed, the noise stops.
Does it sound like something that a mechanic could diagnose on a drive? Obviously don't want to pay to have the thing taken to bits for no reason.
 
As said it could be either of the above - mine had the same symptoms and turned out to be one of the hardy spicers on the front prop shaft. Easy to detect and easy to repair.
 
well i cant be a huge help but i have been told and now practise the rule of - if its not broke dont fix it! Im finding a landrover will go and go and go with bits not right on them. If they need replacing then your landy will tell you by stop working the part in question.

My view leave it till it breaks
 
That view of "leave it to it breaks" is not correct all of the time especially when you get a warning of impending mechanical failure like what we have here. A prop shaft coupling failing on an off road course is not going to cause too much hassle for you or anyone else, however failing when your doing 45- 55 mph on a busy road or dual carriageway, doesn't bare thinking about what could happen ................and not only to you!!!!
 
Thanks for the views chaps! Think I'll get my local independant LR chap to cast his eyes over it. Not really used him much so fingers crossed he won't take the pi**.

Mine was doing that but got quite bad that the metallic rattle was really loud, was my front prop, worn uj, and as stated if it goes you will know about it!!!
 
That's a good point on the exhaust, check you don't gave any heatsheilds rattling loose either.

I'm probably not joking when I say this. you should not be allowed to own a vehicle :)
 
I had simar noise then after about a week the clutch pedal went?? Been parked up since whe I scratch me head!! Lol
Any advice on it??
