Hi Guys

Have developed a knocking sound when changing direction that can be heard but also felt through the front footwell. Have had the disco jacked up felt both wheel bearings but they feel ok. Found play in the drag link short ball joint so replaced that but the noise and feeling is still there.

I have checked all other ball joints they also seem ok. Could it be anti roll bars or as it has ACE are these not present.

The only other thing i could think of would be radius arm bushes or suspension bushes but again they feel ok.

Has anyone had something similar and can point me in the right direction. If not i will check all the above components again.

Cheers for any help fellas:confused:

I would say it's probably your C.V joint inside the swivel housing but someone else will more than likely give a better idea.

Hi, i have had the exact same thing on two of my disco's now and both times it turned out to be the front anti roll bar rubber mounts (td5 with ACE),
dirt cheap but make sure that you get the ones for an ACE equiped car as the non ace anti roll bars are thinner.
Hope this helps:D

the exact problem is this:

There is play in the nearside front ACE anti rollbar bush.

lie under the front of the car and look behind the valance and locate the antiroll bar on the nearside bush, waggle it, you'll feel the knock

new ones are less than a fiver and easy to swap, you just need a single socket to remove the clasp, do one at a time. Smoother the new one in washing up liquid before putting it in, and the job should be done in just a few easy minutes.

Is your "changing direction" left to right or forward to reverse? Because if it is the latter the clonk may be your rear suspension "A" frame ball joint, it sits in the "A" frame right above the centre of the rear differential housing just in front of the fuel tank.
It can be tested by crawling under the rear of the vehicle and using a tyre lever or large screwdriver between the housing and the "A" frame. Easily fixed if it needs replacement.

Hi.

I agree with battenberg, mine did this, Looked at everything and the only play i could find was in the anti-roll bar bushes (mine has ace) so changed them and all good.

It too felt like an radius arm kind of thing and when i couldn't find anything i was concerned that it was a body mount.....but it was just the bushes.....tie them (the anti roll bars) up so they can't fall on your face when you undo the belt.......they're quite heavy and hurt!

Nick.

The symptoms are a single knock felt though the floorpan when driving a chicane at enough speed to activate the ACE, usually straight on at a clear roundabout.

This is down the the ACE ram giving it some welly on the rollbar as the body roll changes from pitch on one side to the other. For some reason it wears out the nearside bush faster than the offside.

Cheers for the info guys, am off out now to have another prod around the roll bars.

Will post later to let you know what i find.

cheers again.

have had a look, there is a tiny bit of play in the roll bar so will order some bushes and change them.

i have also noticed some fresh oil around the ace strut, the ace system feels tight and no pipe work is loose. Will have another look at this in the morning when it gets light and i can take the wheel off.

hopefully these bushes will cure the knock.

Cheers guys awesome info.

i recently done this and mine hasnt been cured i changed the anti roll bar bushes and the drop links and it improved but now when you hold the steering wheel at a certain point (just off centre) and you move the steering wheel left and right 3-4 inches either way there is just a single clonk. any ideas?

Got the anti roll bar bushes today fitted them and the problem is sorted.

Cheers for the advice guys a cheap and simple fix.

Also de EGR'd it today another ten minute job and the throttle response is much better.

Cheers again.
