before people complain, i have searched on here and google, but i'm not convinced one way or another.

my 19j defender had been sitting for a few days , drained the engine oil and changed the filter. the haynes manual stated it should take 6 litres, plus the filter, so i put 5 in and dipped the oil without starting the engine. the oil level shows halfway up the dipstick, way over the maximum mark. i left it alone without staring. i've now gone back to it after a few days expecting the level to have settled, but the level on the dipstick is exactly where it was.

i've read that the dipsticks become loose and give incorrect readings, other people says this is bollocks, could anybody please shed some light for me please?

I did mine a few weeks ago and the workshop manual quantity was bang on. sounds like she didn't quite empty herself

right, i've drained the oil out, but i'll try draining it over night. then put in 5 litres and try firing it up and see what happens

Dipstick holder has pushed in, had the same on my 200tdi, unscrew holder and re-position ( pull the holder back against the nut when screwing into block.
Trust your measuring can not the dipstick.

cheers for that, i'll check it out in the morning, i measured what came out the second time and it was the same as what i'd put in :)

Do as iguana says,I have had the bell come free and the tube slip down upsetting the reading.
