so, i've got a 2004 TD4 freelander.
i had to replace a wheel bearing some time ago and in the process knackered the ABS sensor. so, replaced the bearing and left the abs sensor out till i could afford to replace it. now i've just had to replace the bearing again due to a stone knackering the bearing. and ive fitted a new abs sensor.
yet, the abs/etc/hdc lights are still on.
i read on one thread about driving steady in 1st with the hill decent on, then come off the throttle allowing the abs to kick in to control your speed, which can sort the lights out. well i tried that and momentarily it worked. switched off the hill decent again, the three dash lights stayed off. but pulling away it felt very strange on the drivers rear side (the opposite side to the bearing id replaced). it felt almost like it was wallowing or something, really strange feeling. and after a 50 meters the lights come back on again and the abs stops working! im totally miffed!!!
i wouldn't be panicing so much but the mot ran out last week and i really need the car back on the road but as i understand it, it wont pass an mot with warning lights on the dash?
any ideas gents?

Take it somewhere with a diagnostics machine, The fault may need clearing, if its one that's meant to clear itself then at least the computer should find where abouts the fault is
 
thanks for the reply, a family member has one of those devices that reads fault codes, so thats going to be my first port of call. hopefully it'll show up something i can work with or at least a place to start.
dunno how much auto electricians/garages cost these days to diagnose faults, any ideas?
 
yeah, im going to have to strip that side just to settle and doubts thats its something mechanical. but that side hasnt been touched.
but what im wondering is if the car has developed another abs fault while that other abs sensor wasnt connected and now its got a new one and the abs is trying to work its highlighting another fault.
dont suppose theres anyone in chesterfield with one of those hawkeye jobbies?
 
can anyone point me in the right direction of the connectors for the abs sensors that you test with a multimeter?
i read a thread somewhere describing how you can test the resistance of the sensors to find out if any are duff. but it described yellow connectors. mine (2004 td4) has blue connectors, 2 under the rear archers and 2 under the bonnet (i presume, i've yet to look for them).
also, is there a way of testing the brake light/peddle switch to see if thats on the blink too? besides looking at the brake lights!

ABS Sensor resistance is 950-1150 ohms
An easy way to check all sensors, is to disconnect the battery, and then disconnect the multi plug from the ABS unit and do the measurements from there.
I've got some pictures showing where to plug your multi meter...

I have just got an 02 reg Freelander and the abs, traction control and hill descent yellow lights are all on, I have a meter and will check the abs sensors off your photo but what readings am i looking for please? also would all these come on due to abs being faulty or am I looking at more problems? cheers Mick
 
As I mentioned: 950-1150 Ohms
If the sensor is within that range it's ok.
But if a diagnostic says its faulty even if the Ohm is ok, there is a great chance that the reluctor ring that is ficed to the shaft needs to be cleaned...
 
thanks for the photo's ron, but mine is different, it has 3 columns but not spaced equally apart, two rows on one side and one row on the other, if u understand my meaning.

had a guy come out today to run fault diagnostics, turned up 5 error codes, all historic apparently
the codes are
C1035
C1116
C1048
C1051
C1050

so, he deleted the error codes and all the lights went off.
great i thought, till, i drove down the street, got about 10 yards, clonk from the passenger rear (as if the brake had come on and abs kicked in for a fraction of a second) then all 3 amigo's came back on!
so frustrating!
funny thing is, none of the historic errors referred to the left rear.
to say im baffled is an understatement!
 
f the resistance is ok it might be the voltage as the wheel spins thats not working i had this when i found my ABS light had been wired up off a timer to go out
 
It dies not show on the pictures, but the wires from the ABS are special.
They all are white with black stripe.
Look at the other side of the multi plug, and you'll find them I guess.
