Well this rattle is doing my head in! I am going on holiday at the end of the week so I am trying to sort it out before then! I have a rattle that when free revving the engine comes at around 3000rpm and goes around 3250rpm when driving it sometimes appears under load and on overrun it seems to be better when the engine is cold, it sounds like its towards the front. I have looked at all the obvious stuff, heat shields, flexi and looked generally around, the dpf doesn't rattle when hit. All suggestions would be gratefully received!!!
Vehicle is a 5 door 1998 L series BTW!

luckily the dpf doesn't rattle as it doesn't have one !

would look again at the heat shield on the exhaust, has come up a couple of times, doesn't always do it when cold, but more so when heated up and expanded.

good luck, let us know what you find, could be another one to the list

Whats the thing that looks like a DPF then?

I will have another look at the heat shield I think!

It's a DOC or (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) it is an exhaust aftertreatment device for diesel engines. DOCs contain, palladium/ platinum with Aluminium oxide which serve as catalysts to oxidise hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide and water.

well there you go I've learnt something today then, well I shall change my comment to I banged the DOC and it didn't rattle! lol

Sorry to jump in on your thread but I have what sounds like the same problem a little rattle around 3k.
But on a 1.8 petrol.
Any other ideas what could cause it.
