Mrs F's rag-top top now in storage for the winter, 'The Beast' (1999 V8 HSE, Immaculate Rioja Red 99.5K on the clock) back on the road. Two new bags on the front, new battery and straight through the MOT. Put her through a heat cycle every week whilst stood up and vapour in the exhaust gas had me worried there may be a head gasket/slipped liner issue but tested and all clear.

Oil and filter change on the box but still an issue with 'feathering' between 3rd and 4th when accelerating hard. Didn't know what a MAF was before joining the forum but hoping a new Bosch unit may cure it.

Bill to get her road-ready? £820....then taxed for £123....and then comp insurance for both of us for £300 for the year....which will work out (minus fuel) at round £1 a mile for what she'll cover in the next 6 months.

And you know what? She's worth every penny! First drive for me tomorrow since March and I'm as excited as a kid on Christmas Eve.

Just in case.....thanks for all your help and advice in advance. Loving your work forum members!

Let us know how you get on with this issue as mine does it as well but i think mine is the torque converter lock up as it wont hold in gear

Will do Ovalandrover....

Out of interest, does anybody have strong views on what brand of fuel they use? I found cheap supermarket petrol a false economy so seem to get the best performance and mpg from Shell unleaded.

Took out a 2nd mortgage and filled up with 98 ron Shell V Power once... only for the mpg to drop through the floor. Won't make that mistake again.

Not quite sure what you mean by feathering? If you mean it over revs as it shifts, then try Lucas Transmission Fix. Seems to be a common problem on the HP22 but yours is an HP24. I'm pretty sure it's a sticky valve block. I assume you followed the correct proceedure when you re-filled the gearbox?
LTF fixed mine for the moment.:)

Many thanks Datatek my learned friend!

She wants to change up to 4th and you can feel her making multiple attempts but won't engage when feeding too much power through. She doesn't over-rev whilst doing so but I'm caught in drive no-mans land whilst she's trying. I can get around it by dropping down from D to 3 and revving beyond the normal change point....then shifting back to D and she usually engages to 4th.

I'll be the first to admit I'm a luddite when it comes to this level of tech...but could there be a torque converter issue if not a sticky valve block?

As an aside, my first drive today was only slightly marred on a journey to the vets. Fat tom cat showed his dis-pleasure at having a thermometer shoved up his chutney by peeing on the way back. The overpowering stench is now just about masked by the stench of Christmas Tree air fresheners...#bastard!

If it's trying and failing to shift, it will not be the torque convertor IMO as it should be unlocked, could be lack of oil.
Really needs diagnostics as the 4.6 with the ZF4HP24 has resetable trims for the box if I remember correctly. could also be a sensor or even the transfer ECU, can you select low range OK?
