Surely with all your experience you should know they can be repaired. Or do they not have alternators on Smart cars?

If you read what I wrote you will see that I do indeed know they can be repaired.......exactly what I said. I also said they would not repair it or order parts for it. What part didnt you understand?

For your future reference...most Smarts do have an alternator:rolleyes:

Have it your own way, I used to repair alternators commercially, all the symptoms you gave indicated alternator failure but what do I know.
Oh and I'm not in the UK either, I order my parts from the UK.

:D:D methinks he's Spanish tomcat cos he signed off on datateks post , ADIOS ,,, :confused::confused: AN HE LIKES LANDCRUISERS AND SMART CARS TOO ... IF IF IT WAS ME ID AVE BOUGHT A NICE SHINY 2000 4.6 V8 THOR ENGINED RANGEROVER VOGUE ????????? OH I DID !!!!!!!!! RECIEVERS,,, now that would be a challenge ,,,,,but at the very least he's got a sense of humour so lets wish him well and hope he gets his wifey and dogs home safely " he could always ditch it or get aa European recovery home " n save a fortune on gas /petrol and BATTERYS ,!!!!!! :eek::eek::eek:

Don't be daft, i know electronics are small these days but where in a Smart car would you find room for an RF receiver? :D:D:D
 
Alternator was changed and I also found the small wire from it had lost some insulation. The valley gasket was changed just before the problems arrived so maybe this bit of damages was from the removal of the alt?
In any case, its been running fine. In Slovenia this morning and onto Serbia and Bulgaria later in the day...Getting about 20-21 mpg on petrol @ 70 mph...Car is full with luggage, 2 people, 3 dogs and a very large and heavy top box.. Not bad I reckon?

:) well done it seems your sorted and at 21mpg not bad at all , your journey ie spain then Slovenia then Serbia ?????? etc seems a strange way to come back to uk ????? if that's where your journey ends ????? more details please where did you start from originally and where will you end up finally ??????? :crazy_driver: regards mozz

Our journey started in southern Spain....near Malaga. We did Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia, Serbia and on to our final destination in Bulgaria.
Couldnt get anyone to sort out the LPG in any of the countries we passed through but a tiny garage in a Bulgarian village sorted it out ;-)

The car ran really well all the way (after the probs in Spain) and is proving the perfect car for Bulgaria....easily copes with the roads and hauls materials for the house renovation we are doing...No issues apart from the heater fans still not working and that isnt a problem for now but winter will be different.!
 
Nice. And of course you can order a diode set at your convenience and fix the old alternator as a spare for the next road trip. Probably worth having a spare EAS compressor too. Result.

Will be doing that but the car will die in Bulgaria......no more long trips for it now but I expect it to give me a few years of service here...Not a bad old dog in the end:)
