Hi.

Does anyone have any experience with AMC cylinder heads for the BMW M51 engine that equips the 2.5 diesel P38s ?
I've seen this listed as new on eBay and I've read some less than positive comments on another forum (regarding these heads on another engine), so I'd like to know if anyone has any experience with them ?
 
Upon further research it seems that Turner Engineering sells these as a replacement head for the P38s. Since TE is a reputable company I'm sure these heads can't be all that bad ?
 
Call and talk to Turner and ask your concerns, Don't think you could find a better place to buy from
 
.........I will not invest for 800 pound for a head ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, anyway for the old junk ;;; you never known when it will break down again ,,
 
The question behind this is how to be 100% sure about a second hand head ?
The head in my DSE is cracked (in several places). One shop tested it and said it was fine. Another shop tested it and said it wouldn't hold pressure. Upon better inspection a few cracks were noticed.
Apart from buying a new head, I'm not sure how I can be fully confident of what I'll be installing next.

you would not be sure unless it came with a test certificate. Buy a used head get it tested and it fails could be out a bit of money. New head could get years of service, just got to weigh it out and do what you think is right and live with the choice. How long you plan to keep the car?

I think there is crack testing and there is crack testing.

Did they do just a dye penetration test using a UV light? Or was it a hydraulic test but at what pressure? Another question is it might be OK cold, but leak when it is hot maybe? I don't know.

I assume you would need to make up a test jig using a flat plate to seal off the head face. I have thought about fabricating one.

and what psi would you test at???
