Bought this three weeks ago, not in this condition. Had to fit rear cross member, footwell, some chassis welding, new exhaust, windscreen, roof vents and a hand paint. most expensive bit was the grill. still needs a bit of work in the back but got it just before it was ripped apart to make a camper. another one saved.
 
So if you are not going to use it as a camper what are you going to do with it ?
its part of my pension pot. I can take it to shows driven by my daughter and when I get too old to play it will be sold and fetch more money than if I put it into a pension plan that makes nothing. if everyone rips the back out to make campers another bit of history is lost forever.
 
My 101 camper has been parked on the street for pretty much the entire 20years that I've owned it, visible and attracting attention.

When we drive it places people look at it - I mean general public, not just those who go to land rover shows.

It's attracted even more interest abroad.

Do you see where I'm going with your plan to keep your history parked up on your drive, or at a show?

I mean I have no issue with you doing that, bit please get off your high horse about keeping history in some box where very few ever get to see it.

I take your point about losing another piece of history but I would have thought that any changes that you might make could be reversible . However , I have no problem with you keeping it as it is ( as if my opinion counted for anything ) and I hope you get years of pleasure from it .

I must admit I have been looking at pictures of Land Rover ambulances recently wondering to myself if one could put a later ambulance body onto my 107" Series One . Now that would be a travesty !

I just noticed that there don't appear to be any rear view mirrors , that must make driving in traffic and reversing rather tricky .

Wait until its a LHD 101, and youre trying to change lane on the M25 when its dark and there is rain on the mirrors (and on your glasses from where the door tops dont seal quite right!)
 
When I got my ex-mil LWB with the intention of converting it to a camper I set out to make everything reversible, should be easy as its all unboltable, but the reality is that more and more bits get added, holes drilled, apertures cut and somehow it becomes harder (never impossible) to reverse the changes. Its still a "historic" vehicle and we still get into military shows (just - some odd looks) but it also attracts a lot of attention as a camper. We were at Hayling Island on the weekend - reversed up to the beach, pop-top up and I went to make coffee (requires leads to battery as it draws 20A) and saw we were about to get blocked in, or so I thought, driver said, "hope you don't mind, I just want to take some photos, never seen a pop-top Land Rover". That was a nice touch and we enjoyed the attention. (re lane changes - one of the early mods was side repeaters after i nearly took out an MX5 that was completly in my blind spot). I too draw a pension and keep a close watch on assets, the conversion has added more to the value so far than origniality, as "original" (petrol FFR 12v) its probably in the 3k range, as a camper (diesel, sink, toilet, roof, heater) its 4k plus. Of course fashions change and if every LWB is a camper then that will reverse as I think it could with TDIs, but if you look at the prices for VWs and bespoke Defender campers there's a lot of "headroom".

The mirrors will be fitted this weekend along with a few more bits.
All my vehicles are locked away at a secure location.
 
My Flatulance isn't original, spends it's time between being a daily driver, camper and mobile skip so I'm off to shoot meself....

Mind you I haven't done anything that isnt easily reversible and it's in much better condition than when I bought it so maybe just a kneecapping :p

I was looking for the Defender bar, while I'm sure a Land Rover coffee stall is a crime I'm a bit more conflicted over a conversion to a bar, especially if its real ale.
If its ok for a Spitfire..
