Hello All,

I'm Jim from sunny Southend-on-Sea in Essex. Just a quick message to say thank you for all your patience in advance! I'll be asking way too many annoying questions over the next dew weeks/months/years so thanks for your understanding.

In short: Land Rover Defender from scratch, bottom-up build, experience: you lot. Stupid? Maybe. Do I care? Absolutely not.

Speak to you all soon.

James

Awch you'll have fun. Oh and you can only be admitted to the fold if you post pictures. Lots of them. We love a good rebuild we do

You're on here so you must be

You can probably build a damn good one for the same price as new using parts, better engine, gearbox, axles, everything galvanized etc

Just finished my rebuild, well worth it. Built not bought is definitely the way. Good luck!

Mate that looks sweet. Good job.

My problem (not the medical one) is that I don't have a lump sum of cash to buy everything in one go so it will have to be little by little (in the words of Oasis).

So here is my first question (perhaps this needs to be moved to a new thread now): Start with a brand new chassis or go for a good condition salvage jobby? I've heard the latter can be troublesome to say the least.

Oh and by the way my aim is a Defender 90 Cab, hopefully within the next 10 years :)

Look forward to your help.

Cheers,

Jim

Hi mate, thanks. This was a new custom chassis supplied courtesy of Richards Chassis's(Great guys) oh yeah with a guest appearance from my wallet! Problem with galved salvo chassis is you are never sure if they are straight and by the time you find out it is a bit late. Try stock piling bits prior to the build which how I did it...had seats and rollcage before I even owned the Landy.😄

Yes try the for sale section out but probably best on fleabay, just be careful that it is legit. See the stolen Landy's forum regarding lifted Landy parts appearing on eBay. Last thing you want is to get your new pride and joy confiscated just because it's built on a dodgy chassis.

Ok, 46 posts left then, lol. If I could find a salvage car with a straight chassis what would be the pit-falls I should look for?

Just search the buying guides re chassis issues. I am probably not the best person to ask being;

A) first time owner
B) Having just bought a Landy that needed a chassis.

Just be careful with TD5 Chassis's they seem to be made of worse metal than the older ones and Richards Chassis's told me that they had a tendency to paint them after they had fitted the gearbox crossmember which is where mine had gone. Something I didn't see when I bought, but if you are looking I think you can see it through from the bulkhead outrigger with a torch.
