I recently bought my brother's series I Disco. So far so good...On day two of ownership I thought it sensible to joint the AA and as luck would have it broke down the next day! I was towed to a garage and was informed that the problem was terminal - I was sending a smoke screen down the M3 at time of break down. Bugger. The local LR garage stated it would be oil in the exhaust and that it was likely the piston rings needed to be changed - 1053 GBP. A second opinion found that a cylinder head bolt has threaded meaning the head would need skimming and the bolt would need to be re-tapped. Is this likely? Is it worth it or would I be better with a new engine?

I only bough the car for 3700GBP so keen not to spend a fortune if I do not have to.

Thoughts/comments greatly appreciated - even the ones that suggest buying form your brother is not the wisest thing to do...

buying from your brother is not the wisest thing to do! Did he give you a warranty?

Your brother must have fantastic eyesight.
He saw you a mile away.:) :) :) :D :D :D

Doh. Come to think of it there were some rather big windows in the pub we met up in to exchange money and keys...at the time I could not work out why he was quite so happy...

Probably coz he was gettin you ****ed and ready to roll over and die.;) ;) ;) ;) :D :D :D

normally you whould expect some type of warning of an inpending engine failure :- water temp loss of coolant /oil pressure light , oil burning and loss of oil before the engine lets go is there any chance they have over looked the turbo ,did your brother in law have any problems before you bought the motor ? and i would consider a complete secondhand motor if price is over the top

The cylinder head bolt is seperate and has been shown to me. I guess the question is whether or not it being missing would lead to a warped head and the added cost of needing to skim the head? It could be that I could get away with just re-tapping the bolt...

Just wait till a family member dies and then yel see the fookers. Oh I was to get that, and thats mine I gave it to him and I was to get it back and so it goes on. Self preservation, or selfish preservation, greed and jelousy.

Fighting over principles rather than values and to get something they dont fookin want anyway but, more so dunt want you to get it.

Just like jimmy cricket, "let your conshoonse be yer guide".

But if that fails then kick his melt in.

All,

remind me never to get on the wrong side of you! I thought about the fact I could go in for a number of the suggestions above, however, family get togethers would never quite be the same! My issue is not really with my brother (blood relative not boy from the hood - though his car sales talent makes me wonder) but with the mechanical 'advice' I have received on what to do now. Would simply re-tapping the bolt on its own be worthwhile? I would hate to have to pay twice for the same problem.

Keep the suggestions of how to get even coming, if nothing else it makes an annoying situation quite funny - not sure his other half would think so though!

She wunt if yer shag her and burn yer landie on top of her hubbies motor.

And do you think the get-to-gethers will be the same anyway looking across the table at a prick that robbed you, and once you get yer self full of booze dunt yer think some of these ideas will come to mind.

In relation to yer bolt stripped, drill the fooker out and hellicoil it, it aint ever gona stay in retapping it.

Take yer head off check its flat, fix the bolt threads and fit with a good gasket and new bolts, run for a bit then re-set the tappets.

Howzat;)
