Hi all,

I'll soon be looking at cleaning up various aluminium parts on my rebuild including the transfer box, inlet manifold plus other Ali castings. Does anyone have any advice on what the best methods are to get back to nice clean Ali again?

I've been cleaning mine while it's on the landie. If it's off it would be much easier, I used engine degreaser and wd40 and a hose and some rags.

It takes a while, But I scrape all the oily crap off, Then use brake cleaner and a rag to get the worst off.
After that I use a wire brush on the drill to get the rest off.
Comes up pretty good to be honest, But time consuming. But if you had a jetwash/steam cleaner you could skip the first couple of steps and it'd be a lot quicker.
I've just rebuilt an lt77 and a transfer box and did both the above way. Both look a darn sight better than they did.
Transfer box output housings, One done/one not

They're not perfect, But a lot better than they where and I'm very happy with the results.

They're looking good, fortunately I have access to a diesel steam cleaner which should sort the crap out. Does the wire brush leave any deep marks at all as some of the stuff I'm cleaning will be on show

Ah, That's handy then, I recon the steam cleaner will bring most if not all of it off anyway.

Wire brush doesn't really leave marks as such, But if it's awkward to do it looks uneven.
Look at the gearbox extension casing and it's like that as it's hard to get in.
Transfer box looks the same all over.
So I'd give that a go first and see how you get on.
You may not even have to do that as the steam cleaner should do a very good job to begin with.
