I couldn't find a way to shim it 100% straight with the other pulleys. If I moved it behind the front brackets and packed the top one back out to bring the alternator toward the fan.. then the bottom bracket had to be packed out too which caused the notched timing indicator to fowl the drive pulley.

I've got the right tension and it appears to charge at 13.8V at a fast idle. I'll fit a more suitable alternator when I get to it.
 
the alternator I have fitted to my series 1 I made a bracket to suit with a stagger so the 16acr alt would align .the pulley I was referring to is the one fitted to the alternator you said was labelled ford too small and you would have to rev the arse of it to around 14.volts

My charge light came on last night on the way home and this afternoon it started but none of the electrics worked :mad:

I had to stuff my hand up his frock and twiddle with his ignition spades on the back of the barrel. Looks like one of the original problems I had is re surfacing.

I've bought a S3 alternator to replace the "incorrect" Ford one on my 2A: https://bearmach.com/alternator-sui...-range-rover-classic-v8-carb-vehicles-br-3551

My engine is a suffix A 2.25 petrol, and this alternator is described as for suffix B engine onwards.. well.. I thought I'd try it. :)

It seems too big. I can get the front pulley to align properly, which is an improvement on the Ford one, and the pulley is 1cm smaller than the Ford one that didn't seem to be charging quite as much as some people thought it should be, but there's no room to attach the tensioner without fouling the alternator blades. Over time, without the tensioner, I'm sure I'll lose tension on the fan belt if it's just attached by the through bolt in the alternator bracket.

Can anyone recommend an alternator they know will fit a late 2A or earlier?

the 2a engine uses the alternator/dynamo to keep tension by default. the ford one was used because it lines up correctly. i dont think the s3 one does
 
The alternator should be mounted with two bolts not one very long one ,collar on rear floats in the alternator think it is to allow a bit lateral movement.
To get the tensioner to work you need a longer drive belt.
 
Right, thanks to you all I've got some things to try.
The smaller 45A alternator is coming tomorrow, I'll see how that fits..
A longer drive belt is also a good suggestion, thanks for that blackburn.
I naturally thought the through-bolt that used to go through the block was intended to be used on the S3 alternator bracket too but two separate bolts might be better. And yes there is room for some lateral movement with the use of some spacers. I'll have a play about..
I've finally realised there is no "right" alternator for my 2A, I just have to find what works. :D
The aim here is to find something that delivers a better voltage to the battery than the Ford one was (it had a bigger pulley), and that attaches more securely.. the Ford one could only be fixed in two places at the front so it was wobbly. It could also not be aligned to the other pulleys no matter what I tried with spacers it was always about 5-10mm out.
 
Scot the bracket you have is the same as a series 3 ,pretty sure the engine block did not change significantly series 2a to 3 certainly looks the same.

The other alternator (Defender) doesn't fit as well. It fouls the engine mount. I'll send that one back.

The S3 "suffix B+" alternator does in fact fit if I get a longer fan belt as blackburn suggested. But the S3 parts book says 563132 is the fan belt to use for the 2.25 petrol engine, which is the very 1050mm belt I've got. I think an 1100mm belt will allow me to position the alternator just right with the blades clear of the tensioner and the body clear of the engine mount.

I'm happy to fit a longer belt and have everything neat but it'll bother me wondering why S3s with the same alternator and engine can take a shorter belt. Mine's an 8:1 4-cylinder 2.25.. did the fan or crank pulley shrink at suffix B or something?
