Hi,

I've tried reading through previous threads but can't find the answer I am looking for; so here goes ..... Ive got a 200tdi with a Disco engine conversion (I think). The alternator packed up and I thought that, as I need to replace it, I may as well upgrade it to a 100amp one.

Firstly, I have no idea which alternator is on my landy at the moment? I attach photos (I hope) of the alternator and leads:

I'm guessing it is a 45amp. There are 4 wires in total. 3 into a rubber 'multi-plug' type thing and one with a ring fitting.

The 100amp replacement is wired very differently. Again, I hope I attach photos:

And wonder if anyone could tell me where the 4 existing leads need to connect to on the new alternator ?

(The new one comes with an uprated cable, so I guess this replaces the one with the ring fitting ...... but what to do with the other three, two which are of equal size and one slightly thinner and more pale in colour).

Any help will be much appreciated!!

+ B+ BAT BAT+ 9mm male blade Main positive output connection going TO THE BATTERY (master switch)
D+ As long as there is NO B or B+ this is the main positive output connection.
D+ If there IS a B or B+ this is an auxiliary output connection for external control gear or split charge relays.
- B- E Gnd Bat- Main negative connection. This either runs to the engine block or the battery negative terminal.
6mm male blade F DF Warning lamp connection.
61 Ind L Aux Auxiliary output for external control gear or split charge relays etc.
W AC Phase tap for alternator sensed rev-counter.

Thanks Oldseadog - So, I don't have an alternator sensed rev-counter so, W is out.

That leaves me with 4 cables (3 of which are joined in a multi plug) and one more chunky cable which I think definitely goes to B+.

So, with the three in the 'multi-plug', one of these will be the warning indicator (I'm guessing the thinner one) which I will connect to D+ ?

Where will I then put the other two brown cables which are of the same size, that are currently in the 'multi-plug' ??

Any ideas ?!
 
Your wiring has been modified in the past at some stage. You would normally have either the multi plug or the heavy ring connection to the battery. I think you can connect the three heavy brown battery connections together. IIRC, the two at the plug will run to the starter +ve and the battery itself. It goes without saying, but don't forget to disconnect the battery before making connections - any of the B+ connections could give you a nasty burn/start a fire.
