Good Morning happy Christmas i hope everyone has a good day.
My Names Rob, proud owner of Hank The Tank my 1971 series 3 109 station wagon/estate/5 door running a 2.5 turbo deisel. I know its not the best engine but was in the tank when i got him and it works! pictures will follow.

Straight in there asking for help advise.

The altonator is broken. Out put check and its general state of condition say its time to replace it. The question is as this is an early 90 alternator to the best of my knowlege, and has rated out put that is rather poor. Basically i can rebuild an alternator but was after suggestions of a decent rated one that will work well for hank. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

many thanks and Happy Christmas again.

Rob.

The seiries forum suggested i may get help off this group/ forum.

Unless you have a huge amount of electrical add ons and want to use full lights, heater, radio, internal disco lights etc then a 65amp will easily suffice, without knowing the condition of your wiring it would be foolhardy to suggest anything with a higher output.

My 65amp runs twin batteries a 360 watt veg oil heater (on off constantly), lights and heater without an issue but i lay off the spotlights if running all that

Cheers Steve

Couldn't you get away with spot lights if you have a 65amp one?

360 watt veg oil heater ..... 30 amps
55watt headlights.....10 amps
side rear brake plate.....5 amps
heater blower.... no idea but needle takes big dip on full (more than lights) 20 amp fuse so 15amps would be good guess

if i add 4 55watt spots at additional 20 amps and well over the limit of a fully outputting 65amp alternator assuming the system is 'no loss' and perfect

so no its prob pulling 85 amps minimum

cheers steve

Fair enough :D

Shouldn't have assumed that you had two driving lights

I have two driving lights on with high beam, I do have 4 roof lights, but their only for show

yeah its the veg oil heater that gives a big hit, it utilises 2 180 watt glow plugs set in an ally block to heat the neat used veg oil i run on.

but at 50p a litre running costs Ive saved the £80 it cost 10 times over

Cheers Steve

It is quite a bit of power really, what engine you got Steve? How well does it run?

200 tdi, been running on neat veg for a few years and it runs far smoother than diesel, do add 10% unleaded in the cold weather at the moment as it means it fires first thing in the morning without 30 seconds of cranking

Cheers Steve

and as a rough guide I commute a fair distance and use approx 400 litres a month @ 50p a litre, so save on average about £300 a month over the last 5 years (prob more as i got it used and free for 2 years)

so £300 a month, £3600 a year, £18000 saved over 5 years so for all the doom mongers who say veg will kill your engine,..... hmmm exactly how many tdi's could i buy and replace for £18000 :)

of course that does involve using mine and the good ladys 2500 litres allowance each year.... she drives half the time :)

Cheers Steve

Smart that Steve, I did ask before and a few seemed to think that it wasn't possible, I suppose for about 1/3 of the cost it's worth it, and you could get LOADS of scrap disco's, yank the engine out, scrap the rest, possibly get a few spares off them and make some money back :D and do a **** load to your Land Rover at the same time, Sounds good if you ask me :biggrin1:

Hey dave it's replacing the 40 amp, worked out with lights heating wipers onit uses 50amp. Turned absolutely everything on and the charge light stayed off. Hav heckedme battery this veningnd it still 100% charged. SO it's seemsaliht. Not bad for £54.
