Ok guys, looks like my Discovery needs a new alternator. I know where I can get one for a good price, the only problem I have is installing it. Can anybody here either walk me through it or direct me to a site that can give me step-by-step instructions? Because my mechanic wants to charge over $400 for it, and I don't have that kind of money right now.

Hi

I'm assuming all engines are going to be relativalely the same to change an alternator
Assuming you have disconnected the battery (Saving all Radio/GPS/Phone/Alarm codes)

1 loosen Alternator tensioner bolt (Long thing bar with slot in middle)
2 Slide Alternator so the belt can be removed.
3 Unplug all connectors to diode pack etc (noting their orinentation)
4 Unbolt Alternator from bracket below/around
5 Refit in reverse
6 Refit Belt (new one preferred)
7 Tension belt by moving alternator on the tensioning bar giving desired tension (pressing thumb in middle of belt)
8 reconnect battery and run vehicle checking belt for tension and charging lights

I hope this is some help, you may call certian things different terms but thats how I would change an alternator here in england.

Thanks Charlotte, I appreciate it. BTW, any chance someone could send me a pic of the engine bay for a '95 Discovery with the 3.9 engine? A buddy of mine is a mechanic, and he wants to help me out, but he'll need a picture of the engine setup
