Hi ladies and gentlemen,1997 2.5 DSE Alternator fault flashes on dash and other weird things happen rev counter goes erratic and car idles high starts kangarooing after 10 mins of driving.Ive had the alternator refurbed new battery last sept new cps alternator and battery rechecked by auto electrician.Been going through things one at a time.Found this yesterday the alternator is too hot to touch ie surely this isn't right?Any pointers would be appreciated.
thanks
chris

On rangerovers.net there is an electrical troubleshooting guide. Probably worth working through that. The alternator does get quite hot when it has been running. Usually when it says alternator fault on the dash it is pretty accurate but it could be the wiring.

Someone else on here had erratic revs and the rev counter dropping to zero. Crank Position Sensor was fingered as the cause. Check it is pushed in all the way and the wiring.

Didn't you say you had fusebox issues on another thread? I'd do the electrical troubleshotting guide tests first as they're free but if you know the fusebox is cooked then best replace that first before chasing other electrical issues.

Hi Grrrr waiting on fuse box arrival. The alternator is hot hot hot after 10 mins ideling can barely touch it.
thanks

Didn't you have the alternator refurbed? I would be on the phone to the firm that did the job. Some companies only replace components that have failed as I found to my cost when my alternator packed in when I was on my way to Southern Spain. The replacement I got in Kent lasted the 5k trip around France,Andora, Spain and back home before one of the bearings gave up the ghost. When my mate, who refurbs them for a living, stripped it down he said that it looked like only the brushes had been changed.

Hi tomcat.yes it was refurbed and that's who I took it back to for checking they gave it A1.But going to have another place check it after ive driven for 10 mins.
thanks

Anyone nearby got a spare you could borrow for testing? A breakers maybe if you explain why?

Hi tomcat,Near Glasgow yes male. Thanks for your offer.Going to get some more investigative work done today.Noticed that sometimes the headlights would stay on when keys removed from ignition and then lights turned off had to turn ignition on lights on then lights off ignition off. Also getting transfer box neutral on dash and cant select high or low but transfer box is def in high.Everything on hold just now repair wise until I locate the alternator fault if there is one hopefully fuse box will be here soon.
thanks

That is normal if you turned car off with lights on then switched lights off. Lamps will stay on for 25 seconds to light your drive. Headlamp delay is a feature not a fault.
