Hi Thanks for last imfo, managed to order a Alternator from the UK. 57 pds + tax compared to 267 Euros here in Spain. The sent Alternator has the wrong pully otherwise perfect. Question: How do I swop over the pulley. Inside the pulley there is a nut, inside of that a Allen key (bolt). Do I loosen the nut or the bolt? I do not want to damage the new one. Could use some advice.

Thanks Ian

Sounds to me like you have to put an allen key into the bolt end to stop the shaft turning while you undo the nut.

I tried the last suggestion, the nut is deep inside, no room for a spanner and if I use a socket how can I stop the rotation. Would a vice damage the pulley?

how deep in is the nut - i usually do this with a ring spanner

The top of the nut is 8mm down. There is only room for a socket, a ring spanner wont work.

well that's the type of spanner i use, seems that most disco alts are sent with the 300 pulley, so all 200 owners need to do the swop and that's how i've always done it - it does need to be an angled spanner

post a pic of it ?

the trick is to clamp the spanner in a vice (make sure it's secure) locate the nut into the spanner (having someone to hold the alt is handy) then position the hex key in so it's horizontal and then belt the key with a lump hammer - one sharp but heavy belt should do it as that nut is done up bastid tight

ermmm i paid 34.99 for my alternator, cos its off a austin meastro but is the same as a 200tdi one :D:D:D:D:D,

By the way did ya manage to get the pulley off ok?

Only my opinion as I've not had to change a Landy alt pulley but I usually wrap an old fan belt around the pulley, pull it tight then hold the belt in a vice. That stops the shaft moving and allows you to just use the right size socket.

if you have access to air tools all you need to do is use a deep socket on an air gun and hold the pulley with your hand! it will come undone. i used to recon these all day everyday and this method never failed!

:wtf: And I thought I was stoopid when I tore a big chunk of my finger off between to big lumps of granite block ( Should have wore gloves !!! ) that is just asking for a load of pain and no bloody fingers left

i had that problem with one them 50 odd quid ones. had to put my old pulley on and also a spacer behind

the alts dont have woodruff keys and so when you use an airgun if the nut becomes loose it only spins the shaft and not the pulley! so therefore your fingers are safe plus you could always let go!

it'd be difficult not to let go as it'd probably have sliced yer fingers off
