The standard heaters are pure **** :) I took out the motor and matrix to give me some more room when fitting the 200tdi engine, the air box is where the matrix/ blower motor used to be. Problem is winters hitting pretty fast now and I'm getting cold :p I've read a bit about them in car heaters that you plug in to your fag lighter but even the ebay sellers selling the things aren't afraid to tell you there ****e!

Anybody got any ideas for what I could cobble up as a replacement?
 
there is nothing stopping you from putting it in the tub behinde the seat passenger side. just means you have to drill a hole for the inlet pipe for the fan and re route the water pipes preferbly along the gear box tunnel;
 
I removed the rear heater from a Metrocab taxi and mounted it behind the rear seat in my Ser 2 station wagon. Piped it in series with the original heater and sent the pipes underneath the floor, suitably supported and lagged. Wired it up to a switch on the dash and t'jobs a good 'un. Actually gets too hot in Landy now!
 
Do the same as cabbie if his works, I have fitted rads in the boot and heaters in odd positions in kit cars and had all kinds of trouble, I dont think a standard water pump can push water to far.
Large bore pipes will help.
 
I've been toying with the idea of taking the heater matrix out of any old scrap car, mounting against bulkhead by gear stick (only truck cab) then plumbing into the pipes to the current heater matrix. That way i will have a little radiator in the cab, no need to worry about fans, etc. just let it radiate heat.

Bascially i was looking for THE cheapest solution possible.

VW Golf/Jetta Matrix & 2 Tee pieces then Ya mite wanna fit some sort of ball valve to shut it off in summer though.
 
We have a camper van, which has a brilliant little heater on it. Running some 1/2" pipe from engine . Very useful when going surfing in the winter. We bought it with the camper. But i think it's pretty standard in panel van type campers. Goto the scrap yard and pick 1. There pretty robust things.

Has 3 motor speeds and you have a control of the amount of heat to output i.e. Water put in the radiator.
 
I intend to fit a night heater from an HGV to my County. Take a bit of plumbing in as it runs off the diesel tank, plus it's 24v (no I haven't got a military spec landy!), but once it's in it'll supplement the standard heater nicely. Plus you can set the timer to come on during the winter mornings so it's already defrosted and toastie when you get in!!:D
