ffs dimwit.. if pulling hand brake on while moving int a good idea then pulling it on while moving and using an early 19th century brake tester int a good idea either! unless this brake tester has come from the magic land of narnia and can make the half shafts and stuff extra strong fer the duration of the test.

Just out of interest, has anyone got an MoT tester who DOESN'T jam the handbrake on at speed to get a reading on the meter? And if so, what DOES he/she do?

10. Carry out the following procedure Place the wheels to be tested in the rollers. Run both sets of rollers together to align the vehicle. Chock the other wheels of the vehicle fore and aft. Run both sets of rollers together. Keep the handbrake ratchet disengaged for as long as the brake is applied. Apply the brake slowly and progressively without causing transmission snatch. Note the gauge readings and calculate the brake efficiency (see Method of Calculating Brake Efficiency on page 26).

I've never come across a tester with a twin-roller set-up. Probably the land values are too high here in London.
I see that the official rules do specify the meter as well:
"When using a decelerometer to test a transmission handbrake, keep the ratchet disengaged for as long as the brake is applied. Take the efficiency reading without the occurrence of transmission snatch or judder." I can't find a mention of slope testing.
Are you really in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysilogogogoch Yella? It's almost worth the trip out there - I've got a mate in Llangollen I could go and visit.

The way that we MOT test landy h/brakes is as follows
1 chock front wheels when rears are central in the rollers
2 ascertain the brake efficency reading that you require to see for 16% of the vehicle weight
3 start rollers
4 pull up handbrake slowly until you see the reading that you require for a pass and stop rollers

this is how our local VOSA man (he drives a 200tdi disco which he has had from new) told us to brake roller test if we did not want to use the decelorometer. this method cannot be used on newer landy's with a viscous diff in the transfer box.
