i am still at a loss to why your building it from a 109 chassis profile? An 88 profile would be lighter as its not so deep. Likewise a RR chassis design is lighter again. Surley if you were wanting to save weight you wouldn't choose the deepest section of all the rover chassis! Even a 90 or 110 is deep that why everyone used to use old RR chassis that and its a higher quality steel than Land rovers and is usually still solid.

I can't remember what year that was exactly probably about 1987 so many moons ago.
Who else ? this pic was our team the one on the left is Andrew Bowler's, the one in the middle is Mark Bowler's and me on the right the trophy's are some from one season. I think that year Drew and myself won the National team recovery.

this chassis is almost the same as a SWB but an inch deeper so if you think about it there is 4 strips of steel about 3 foot by 1 inch extra but there is no hump under the drivers seat' the radius arm mounts are lower which will give better geometry and the engine and gear box will be lower which in turn will give a lower centre of gravity and more suspension travel. all options were considered of course you might think differently but that is part of the fun building a motor.
not having a go chap just wondered why if you are so keen on weight saving. I remember seeing the left hand vehicle in the picture Drew's mota i guess competing when I was probably only 4 or 5 years old. Don't remember watching many alrc stuff twas mainly awdc back then. Its possible i'm confused so long ago! But the colourscheme and the cutouts where the door is looks so familiar! I think my old man has some old vhs tapes from the late 80's early 90's with it trialling or comping somewhere.
Thanks for that Pete but I should be ok now it is the profile of the main rails that the ALRC are particular about which I have now made.

I did a trip to Tamanrasset in a 109 safari took 4 months just fantastic.
its been part restored, just finishing it off, its not got the 6 pot iv'e been warned off them, but i am going to put a v8 in it, the roof bit is going to be the most testing, cheers sorry i did'nt realise there was a load more threads on when i put mine on, so looks like you are sorted
Thinking about it I would go for a TDI in your Carawagon just so economical and reliable I saw a chap in the Sahara with a snapped cam belt he straightened the push rods on a rock fitted a new belt and was off again not many engines like that now but just what you need 500 miles from a shop.
