Hello one and all.

I've not used a message board in years but I've been lurking here for a while and using the place as reference so I figured I may as well join and throw my hat in the ring.

I'm a Scottish based landy fan and have been after one for as long as I can remember.
Like many, many others, I'm after a 90 but I'm afraid they're a bit too rich for my blood at the moment.

So I reckon it'll have to be a disco or maybe even a freelander.

My mechanical knowledge is limited so I'd like something that's running and road legal so I can learn as I go. I want a project that I can tinker with and make beefier for off roading.

They do all seem to hold a decent price however so I'm not sure where else to look other than the obvious of gumtree and eBay.

Any advice anyone can give is greatly appreciated, especially when it comes to finding a bargain!

Anyway, thanks for having me.

Hey! If you are C Scotland based then get yourself over to the landyman at Larbert. he has a yard full of Series 3's, Defenders and some Disco's. He also has a repair workshop and stocks loads of used spare parts. I cannot remember the name of the place but I can give you directions. Coming out of Larbert town centre westwards, at the traffic lights turn left to Falkirk, go down the hill and once at the bottom turn right and then first left up a track. It takes you past a steel fabricators with the first sign of landy's the S3 wrecks for scavenging parts. Go on up the track parallel with the railway line. The office is upstairs above the w'shop. Ask if he has any vehicles for sale, there are lot of interesting vehicles in the yard. Hope you have a lok and good luck finding a Landy. You could also try Alex Lindsay at Broxburn at East Mains Ind Estate. Try googling both.

Thanks John, that's great info.
Broxburn is pretty close to me, a 20 minute drive at most probably so I may pop along this weekend to have a mooch around and see what they've got on offer.

I googled Larbert Land Rover and this is the place that popped up;

Is that the one?

I also remember seeing a place on the A71, just before Wilkieston, that always had a few landies kicking about for sale.
I've not been down that way for a while so I'm just wondering if you know anything about them?

Yeh that's the place. I know the place in Wilkieston as well but haven't passed that way for years. They always had well priced refurbed Series landys, could be worth a try. Alex Lindsay and Gemm usually have vehicles that need doing up rather than ready to go vehicles. Gemm had some really chunky looking LWB series 3's last time I was there. Good luck. AL is first right after going in the main entrance and then first right again. His workshop is down at the bottom on the right.

So I had a drive past Wilkieston today and the guy had what looked like a SWB series 3 out on his driveway with for sale signs on it.
But the garage and gates were shut so I couldn't stop for a look.
Like you said though JohnS, it looked to be fully restored which most likely makes it too expensive for me!

I also had a wander up to Broxburn to check out Alex Lindsay and there was a lot of Discos in various states of repair and a few series lying around.
All a bit too far gone from what I could see though and his shop was also shut up for the weekend!

I'll try the place in Larbert next weekend if I get a chance, but until then it looks like I'll be scouring the net everyday looking for a bargain.

SLROC Comp Safari weekend?

Welcome, whereabouts are you?

Welcome to the forum :)

Have you tried Autotrader? (Auto Trader UK - New & used cars for sale) if you do a search for all vehicles that are manufacturer Land Rover but then use the keyword: Defender (rather than selecting any model)

It will bring up all the listings for all the variants of the Defender.

Also you can select Trade listings only if you don't want to do private.

Also how much you wanting to spend?

Don't be afraid to travel nationally to pick up a good Landy!

The Landy's at Wilkieston are usually simply tarted up with their existing spec; just a painted chassis and tidied up for MOT so it may be worth checking the price. Worh trying ScotAds, it always has listings for landy's. GEMM may only have landy's that he will re-furb, but still worth a nosey. Good luck.

Good to know about the Wilkieston lot, that's definitely something I'll keep an eye on.
ScotAds came with very few results I must say or they were fairly expensive.
GEMM intrigues me still and I know some guys out that way so I may ask one of them to swing past and have a gander.

Hey FMog, glad to see you're settling into the place and I like the look of that 90 you've got yourself.
My budget right now is a rather modest 1500, but that might go up shortly.
I should be doing some freelance work in the near future so that should take care of a few bills and let me focus on saving.
