Hello, Could some kind sole educate me a little please. I drove about a mile this morning to a car park in our village and as I stopped to reverse into a space all of a sudden I thought the car was on fire, suddenly smoke was appearing from the front of the car it was frightening. I got out immediately and saw that it was coming from a pipe that is situated on the inside of the nearside front wheel under the car behind the front bumper if that makes sense it looks like some sort of escape pipe or an overflow pipe. I switched off the engine for no more than a couple of minutes then restarted the engine and all was normal.

This is the second time that this has happened, the first time was when I stated my car a couple of months ago outside of my home although the smoke was not anywhere near as severe on this ocassion I switched off for a few moments and restarted and all was ok up until now. Could anyone please enlighten me as to what this pipe is for and why smoke poured out of it this is twice now. Is it dangerous and do I have to replace anything?

Thanking you for any response in anticipation

Rob.

Thank you very much for your quick response. Is this anything to worry about? if it happens again should I switch off the engine and then back on again? It is only the second time that this has happened and I have had three previous Freelanders and never had this experience hence my worry. If it does happen again If I leave the engine running will the smoke dissapear quickly? Thank you for your help.

it goes on out side temp and does not turn off until it self reaches a temperature. I got fed up with mine wasting fuel and being told my car was on fire, and I pulled the plug on my old car

Cor blimey you joined in August 2006 and only just posted today??

That is some serious loitering!

Could have had a very reliable freelander lol

All my previous Freelander's were company vehicles new and after two year lease another new one etc. Any problems, which were so scarce I can't even remember any, it would have gone back to the L/R dealer and was serviced as per hand book so yes some serious loitering. Now those day's have finished so have to face reality now, scary :( thanks for all the replies.

When Top Gear did their race against an Americas Cup yacht here in NZ, Jeremy Clarkson called hire cars the fastest cars in the world - but lease cars aren't far off that :) Good you chose a Freelander after having them supplied by work. Just make sure you keep the tyres pumped up now its your own car :)

No.

Perfectly normal behaviour.

It will switch off of its own accord when the engine gets up to s predetermined temperature.
