Evening all,

First post here, so be gentle...!

I am currently restoring my recently purchased 1987 Land Rover 90 and I am at the stage of trying to sort out the wheel and tyre situation. It is currently on the standard steel wheels and standard tyres however as I am modernising the rest of the vehicle I would like to fit some nice alloys to the old girl.

Being new to the Land Rover scene I am not 100% on things, but I have searched and seems that it is not that straight forwards due to the age of my 90 and it having drum brakes all around.

I have managed to find a very nice set of Boost alloys with good tyres, firstly at a good price, secondly local to me too and thirdly they also include the wheel nuts too - so ideally this is something that I would like to buy.

I was wondering if anyone could conclusively say what would be needed to fit a set of Boost alloys to the old girl? They are shod with 265 > 75 > 16 tyres however that isn't going to be the issue here I don't think...

Is it a case of getting hold of a set of spacers, popping them on and I'm then golden?

I spotted this early 90 on eBay (link) which looks like spacers were fitted and modern alloys on it too.

Any information much appreciated - thanks in advance!

2. Not searching the site. I'm sure it will have the answer as wheels and tyres have been done a lot.

Many thanks for the welcome and apologies if any offence was caused, although I have now popped an introductory thread up. I did contemplate such a thread prior to posting the above, although thought it best to combine the two what with my introductory info... Ah well, belt and braces now I suppose...

I've been searching all around the web and this site for the past couple of days and unfortunately I have not come up with anything conclusive or exactly specific to my situation so I decided to register up and ask, fingers crossed maybe someone will know.

You dont have drums all round.

Disks up front drums out back.

Easiest way to put alloys on a drum braked 90 would be to fit a disco disk axle to rear

Seems they should fit. May need some adjusting on the stops

'88 tratter, disks on front drums on back. You'll need 30mm spacers and hub-centric ones are best

Changing the back axle Tis Bollix!

95% of the time the alloys fit the rear axle the alloys fitting the front do not! this is because of the deep type older style drive members fitted to these axles. On the rear the brake drum or the thickness of the brake drum means the protrusion of the drivemember is less by the thickness of the drum 5 ot 6 mm this JUST clears the drive member on the rear. The front drive member hub on the other hand sticks out 10-12 mm more than the hub face because the hub is a different design. Although early RRC have the same stubs and hubs they run Domed stub shafts to allow fitment of alloys. It is the heads of the drive member bolts that fowl the alloy. The fact that the rear has drums means that the front are the older type deep type drive members and thus 90's 110's with drum brakes will not fit. Its not that the alloys do not fit the drums themselves because most of them fit fine on the drums its because the ones with drums have the older type front.

How do I know. Been there done that got the machined drive members countersunk bolts etc. Not worth it Imo but you can just buy some spacers and run longer studs on the front some guys I knew run 2 old brake drums machined down and welded 2 together per side with longer studs it works but not nice.

Others have wedged them on the front and I'll be honest its really close but does not sit flush fully back against the hub which is not going to work. Seen more than a few wobbly alloys on older 90's with old axles pottering about. God knows what its like on the motorway.

Mine is an 89 with discs front & drums rear. 30mm spacers all round allows Boost alloys to fit. Don't scrimp on the quality of the spacers.
